24 Apr 2017

Earlier this month singer Sonu Nigam courted controversy when he unleashed a series of tweets claiming that the use of loudspeakers for the morning azaan had disturbed his sleep. However, it wasnt just this statement that landed the popular singer in the eye of the storm; instead it was his culminating tweet that read, Gundagardi hai bas which created a furore. While a certain section of the audience took to twitter condoning Nigams tweets, another segment stood up for the singer. Now, lending his support to Sonu Nigam is none other than Saif Ali Khan who decided to break his silence on the same claiming that the use of loudspeakers for the azaan is a sign of insecurity. Talking about Sonu Nigams tweets in an interview to a popular daily Saif Ali Khan stated that while at one end he agrees the lesser sound the better, on the other he says that there should be certain decibel levels allowed across religious practices. Further Saif who normally steers clear of commenting on controversial topics added that he felt the use of amplification of sound during azaan comes from insecurity, and that this was not just in India but also in Israel where three different religions co-exist. Reasoning his statement about insecurity Saif went on to explain that as a minority, you would like to make your presence felt and hopefully accepted, and that if someone says that it should be extinguished, it will make people uncomfortable. Concluding his explanation about his views of using loudspeakers and amplification devices during religious practices while also talking about Sonu Nigams tweets Saif added that is fine to express your views on the decibel levels, but he still felt that Sonu Nigams tweet was a bit aggressive and that religion should be a private affair and we should be a secular country.
