Dilemma over story credit for Ek Thi Daayan

21 Jan 2013

Emraan Hashmi-starrer, Ek Thi Daayan, is based on a short story written by Mukul Sharma (father of Konkona Sen Sharma). When Vishal Bhardwaj decided to convert the story into a film, Mukul Sharma expanded the story into a bigger novel which was used for the screenplay of the film.

Now the latest news is that after the screenplay was written, it was turned into a brand new novel and a lot of confusion has arisen as to who should be given credit for this novel. Explaining the confusion director, Bhardwaj says, "First, it was a short story which was developed into a novel by Mukul Sharma. I turned the novel into a film script. Now, we have written a whole new novel using that script." Bhardwaj says that that since he and Sharma worked so closely on every stage of the development of the script as well as the novel, they have lost track of which parts should be credited to them individually. "The scripts as well as the novel bear both our names. Mukul has threatened that if I don't take credit for the novel, he won't take credit for the script. It's all very confusing," laughs Bhardwaj.

The film, directed by Kannan Iyer, will release on April 18. It stars Emraan with three female leads - Konkona, Kalki Koechlin and Huma Qureshi.
