Mary Kom's Darshan Kumaar left out of Toronto entourage

5 Sep 2014

Darshan Kumaar who is outstanding as Mary Kom's husband in the bio-pic releasing this week, was not able to attend the film's premiere at the Toronto Film Festival on Thursday night.

Darshan, a talented new actor from Delhi who bagged the prized role after several screen-tests to ensure he would look convincing in the part, says he's clueless as to why he wasn't allowed to join Priyanka at the Festival.

"There is nothing I'd have liked better than to be standing there supporting this wonderful film. Priyanka is no doubt the star of the show. But I think I've also contributed to the film's over-all impact. There would have been no Mary Kom if there was no Onler to support and encourage her," says Darshan.

Darshan is the latest in the long line of actors who find themselves left out in a heroine-centric film's marketing and promotion. During the publicity of Vikas Bahl's Queen , Rajkummar Rao who played the male lead opposite Kangna was nowhere to be seen. Now for Vikram Bhatt's Creature, Bipasha Basu who takes centre stage in the plot is seen happily promoting the film solo without her romantic interest Imran Zahid.

Khoobsurat the other heroine-oriented film on release, does provide us occasional glimpses of its make lead Fawad Khan. But by large Sonam is managing the marketing without male support.

Says a source from the Mary Kom team, "We all feel Darshan should have accompanied Priyanka to Toronto. Instead she has gone with director Omung Kumar. Earlier in Kapil Sharma's show when the film's producer and creative director Sanjay Bhansali came to know that Darshan was not invited he boycotted the show. The recording had to be cancelled and re-scheduled. Finally we saw Priyanka with Omung on Kapil's show."
