9 May 2016

Sanjay Leela Bhansali's last romantic periodic drama Bajirao Mastani went on to win the National Award. Now the filmmaker is all set for yet another epic story. Sanjay Leela Bhansali is all set to get the opera-ballad story of Padmavati to the big screen.

The filmmaker who had once directed this tragic story of Padmavati at Paris' prestigious opera house, Theatre du Chatelet, has now been scripting the same into a film. Rani Padmini aka Padmavati, the queen of Merwar was known for her beauty. When the second ruler of Khilji dynasty, Alauddin put forward his request to meet the queen in person, despite it being against the rules for a Hindu queen, her husband and Raja Ratan Singh persuaded his wife Padmavati to meet him. Her beauty not only allured Allaudin but the Khilji ruler soon became so obsessed with her that he decided to wage a war against Ratan Singh. Ratan, whose army was comparatively smaller and weaker decided to fight till his last breath. After the defeat of her husband's army, Padmavati, out of fear of Allaudin and love for Ratan, jumped in the pyre along with other women of Merwar.

From what we hear, the film tentatively titled Padmavati, will be written by Prakash Kapadia. The said film may probably also star Ranveer Singh, whose character is yet unknown. Also it has been learnt that this film may release on December 15, 2017.
