Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], April 3 : Late actor Amjad Khan's dialogue 'Kitne aadmi the?' from 'Sholay' still echoes in everyone's mind. His portrayal of Gabbar Singh in Ramesh Sippy's directorial gave Hindi cinema one of the most iconic villains. However, he was not the original choice for the role.Actors Danny Denzongpa and Ranjeet were also approached by the makers to essay the role of Gabbar in 'Sholay', which starred veteran actors Amitabh Bachchan and Dharmendra as protagonists. In a recent interview with ANI, Ranjeet took a stroll down memory lane and revealed that he rejected 'Sholay' to honour his friendship with Danny."When they (makers) came to me, they told me that Danny would not come now. In fact, I had no idea about the role as well. I clearly told them, 'Danny is a good friend of mine...Either you get me no objection letter from him or at least let him talk to me. if he agrees, then I will do the film.' But I knew why he was not coming and I refused to be a part of the film," Ranjeet recalled."This role was destined for Amjad Khan...Ho sakta hai main Gabbar karta toh shayd audience ko nahin acha lagta," Ranjeet quipped.Ranjeet and Danny share a great friendship to date. He often shares pictures and videos with him on social media.Take a look at this post by RanjeetIn a video posted by Ranjeet on his Instagram handle in 2022, Ranjeet was heard advising his kids and the younger generation.View this post on InstagramA post shared by Ranjeet (@ranjeetthegoli)The video, presumably from a get-together, captures Ranjeet, Danny and Akbar Khan at their candid best. Danny asked Ranjeet what he'd like to tell the new kids. Ranjeet replied, "I'm your friend. You know your life and what you want from it. You've brought up in a way that you can take your own decisions."This left both Danny and Akbar teasing Ranjeet for being so wise.Ranjeet and Danny ruled the big screen with their villainous acts back then.
Released in 1979, Mr Natwarlal starred Amitabh, Rekha, and Amjad Khan, and had Hrithik's uncle Rajesh Roshan as a music composer.During the shooting of the film, Rajesh Roshan had taken little Hrithik to the sets as he was supposed to sing a line in 'Mere Paas Aao' song from the hit film.Recalling that day, Hrithik dropped a picture from the sets of 'Mr Natwarlal'. In the image, the little Hrithik could be spotted staring at Amitabh with his mouth open."There is a little bit of Amitabh Bachchan in each one of us. Open mouthed and full of wonder. That's how I still am when I see the man. Happy birthday @amitabhbachchan, Mehboob studio Bombay 1979: My chacha Mr. Rajesh Roshan took me along for the song recording for Mr Natwarlal after I agreed to sing a line in the song "Mere paas aao". I backed out last minute , for reasons very clearly visible on my face in the picture above," Hrithik captioned the post. The particular post has garnered several likes and comments."What a lovely image and moment," Farhan Akhtar commented."Pure gold," Ayushmann Khurrana commented.Hrithik has worked with Amitabh in films like 'Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham' (2001) and 'Lakshya' (2004).
The vintage picture, shared by the 'Deewar' actor revealed a poster of her 1978 film 'Kasme Vaade' outside a cinema hall in Chandni Chowk, Delhi.Dating back 44 years, 'Kasme Vaade' was Neetu Kapoor's blockbuster hit film, which also starred Amitabh Bachchan, Raakhee, Randhir Kapoor and Amjad Khan in the lead roles.Neetu had a very short role in the hit action thriller, as she portrayed the role of Randhir Kapoor's fiancee in the film.Directed by Ramesh Behl, the film was again remade in Tamil, Telugu and Sinhalese language. The 'Amar Akbar Anthony' star recently welcomed a new member in the Kapoor family, her daughter in-law Alia Bhatt, and she is going to be a grandmother soon, as Ranbir-Alia recently announced on social media that they are expecting their first baby,Meanwhile, on the work front, Neetu was recently seen in Dharma Production's 'JugJugg Jeeyo' which marked her comeback on the big screen. Kamal Haasan and Shah Rukh Khan have mutual respect and affection that they share ever since Kamal directed Shah Rukh in Hey Ram and even named Shah Rukhs character after one of Kamals favourite actors, Amjad Khan. Now 18 years after Hey Ram, it is Shah Rukhs turn to pay a homage to Kamal Haasan. In Aanand Rais eagerly awaited Zero where Shah Rukh plays a midget a la Kamal Haasan. The latest information from sources close to Zero is that director Aanand Rai and Shah Rukh Khan plan to host a special screening of Zero for Kamal Haasan. Shah Rukh and Aanand Rai want Kamals opinion on the midget act in Zero. After all, Kamals Appu Raja is still the classiest midget act in Indian cinema. No matter what Shah Rukh achieves in this part, he will be compared with Kamal. Having Kamal on board for Zero is a sensible decision. Also Read: Oops! When Shah Rukh Khan thought Kajol needed to LEARN acting
While Amjad Khan took Bollywood by storm, his daughter is now all set to capture hearts with her poise. We are talking about Khan's daughter Ahlam, who is now all set to take the proverbial plunge into Bollywood around next year.
Ahlam, who hails from a theatre background, has now signed her first film titled Miss Sundari, which is an adaptation of Makrand Deshpande's play 'Miss Beautiful'. A modest Ahlam, when asked about her debut in Bollywood, said that stage will always remain her first love.
The legend of Amjad Khan is all set to live on. Even though the actor left for heavenly abode more than two decades ago, his work is still remembered, most notably the part of 'Gabbar' that he played in Sholay. Now when the film's 3D version is being readied for release, the makers are looking at paying homage to the actor.
"In order to do that, they are inviting his elder son Shadaab Khan to be a part of the film's promotional activities," informs a source, "More than a marketing peg, it is an emotional chord that they are looking at striking with the audience. While Amitabh Bachchan and Dharmendra, the original 'Jai' and 'Veeru' are around, there was no way they could have missed out 'Gabbar'."
For the uninitiated, Shadaab Khan isn't new to the tinsel world and was in fact the lead opposite Rani Mukherji in her debut film. As an antagonist, he was paired with her in Raja Ki Ayegi Baraat (1997). Post that he was seen in a couple of more films and once they didn't do well at the box office, he moved away from the B-town but not before directing a film Highway 203 that unfortunately never saw the light of the day.
"Ever since then, Shadaab has stayed away from the arc lights but now that he is being asked to stand in for his father, he may not be able to say 'no'," says an industry insider, "It is the biggest reunion ever for the Sholay team. Even though there have been quite a few re-releases that the film has enjoyed over last three decades, a 3D arrival is being pitched as an event no less. It is a glorious moment for all and if Shadaab is around, it is only going to make the fans and followers of Amjad Khan happy. Through him, at least they would be able to live the late actor's legacy."
On being contacted, Jayantilal Gada, who is bringing Sholay 3D on screen, confirmed that not just Shadaab but even other family members of Amjad Khan are being approached to be a part of this event.
While this would be a golden moment indeed, considering Hema Malini and Jaya Bachchan are active in the film circuit as well, unfortunately there won't be anyone present to fill in the big shoes of 'Thakur' Sanjeev Kumar.
The legendary yesteryear's actor late Amjad Khan's son, Seemaab Khan, will be seen making his Bollywood debut with the upcoming Sajid Khan film Himmatwala. However, Seemaab is not acting in the film but working as an assistant director on the film starring Ajay Devgn and Tamannah.
Apparently, Seemaab's brother Shadaab is a close friend of Sajid's and recommended him. While Sajid, who has immense respect for late Amjad Khan and regrets the fact that he never got the opportunity to work with his childhood idol, was more than happy to have Seemaab on board.
Incidentally the original Himmatwala featured Amjad Khan playing the role of Sher Singh Bandookwala-the role now being essayed by Mahesh Manjrekar in the remake.
It looks like Mahesh Manjrekar cannot stay away from villainy roles. Or maybe villainy roles can't stay away from him. Having sworn off evil guys' roles, he is back at it full-throttle. This time he has stepped into Amjad Khan's role of evil Zamindar Sher Singh Bandookwala in the remake of Himmatwala.
The role has an interesting history. Amjad Khan badly needed to escape the iconic status accorded to his Gabbar Singh act in Sholay. Himmatwala gave him that opportunity.
Now Mahesh Manjrekar has taken up the challenge of doing Amjad's part which was villainous but also ridiculous for not realizing self-important he seems.
Says Manjrekar, "I am not following Amjad Khan from the original. I am going by whatever my director Sajid Khan tells me."
