19 May 2017

VinayShuklaandKhushbooRankas much-discussed documentary An Insignificant Man which was stopped by Examining Committee(EC) andRevising Committee (RC) of theCensor Board Of Film Certification (CBFC) was viewed personally on Wednesday by the chairperson ofCBFC. PahlajNihlanipassed the film with a UA and no cutsBut a huge rider. The films producerAnandGandhi ( The Ship Of Theseus fame) and co-directors Shukla and Ranka have been asked to get NOCs (No Objection Certificates) from everyone concerned, includingKejriwalhimself. According to sources in theCBFCthe film is potentially damaging to the image ofKejriwaland hisAAMparty. It has extensive footage of behind-the-scenes working and manoeuvrings in theAAMparty andKejriwalis not shown in a very authoritative light. On the contrary he comes across as someone who is constantly uncertain and needs to be advised minutely on every move. Its surprising thatKejriwaland theAAMParty opened the doors of their party functioning to a film that basically demolishes the Party and its leaders image, says a CBFC source. When questioned directlyNihalanisaid, Yes, weve asked the makers of this documentary to furnishNOCs from the people whom theyve documented. This is standard procedure. Prior to this when a film on the Prime Minister entitled ModiKaGaon was brought to us we asked for anNOCfrom the PMs office.

Ship Of Theseus actress protesting in Egypt

5 Jul 2013

Promoting films has become the most crucial aspect these days and the stars need to go out of their way to be seen everywhere before the release of their film. However, Egyptian actor Aida El Kashef, who stars in Anand Gandhi's film Ship Of Theseus (SOT), won't be able to market the film for a completely unique reason, which is the ongoing unrest in Egypt protesting the regime of president Mohammed Morsi.

When Aida was approached by Kiran Rao (who is presenting the film in India) and Anand to be part of the film's promotional events, she replied saying she won't be available. "Aida hasn't been able to make it because she is participating in the revolution currently going on in Egypt. It's truly an inspirational story for all of us. Although it's disheartening that one of our cast members isn't with us, we're amazed at what she is doing. She sent us a long email stating why she won't be able to make it," confirms director Anand Gandhi.

In the film, Aida plays a visually impaired but celebrated photographer who is in the process of undergoing a cornea transplant that will restore her vision. "At the site of the protests, she is often called 'the girl with the camera'. After wrapping up a couple of schedules (of SOT) too, she had gone back to Egypt to protest against the then-president (Hosni Mubarak)," says Anand, adding that right before the last schedule also, she had flown back to Egypt. "We couldn't even reach her. I had to contact her though a friend's Facebook page," says Anand Gandhi.
