Darshan Ashwin Trivedi is all set to remake 'Ek Ruka Hua Faisla', a 1986 classic legal drama directed by Basu Chatterjee.'Ek Ruka Hua Faisla' is among the director's most acclaimed films and is considered the biggest courtroom drama in Indian films. The incredible ensemble cast includes Atul Kulkarni, Suvinder Vikki, Dibyendu Bhattacharya, Neeraj Kabi, Divya Dutta, Vineet Kumar, Tannishtha Chatterjee, Kani Kusruti, Hemant Kher, Samvedna Suwalkar, Luke Kenny, and Manu Rishi Chaddha.Taking to Instagram, trade analyst Taran Adarsh shared the announcement. He wrote, "REMAKE OF BASU CHATTERJEE'S 'EK RUKA HUA FAISLA' ANNOUNCED... Director Dr #DarshanAshwinTrivedi will remake #EkRukaHuaFaisla, a legal drama directed by #BasuChatterjee in 1986.The ensemble cast includes #AtulKulkarni, #SuvinderVikki, #DibyenduBhattacharya, #NeerajKabi, #DivyaDutta, #VineetKumar, #TannishthaChatterjee, #KaniKusruti, #HemantKher, #SamvednaSuwalkar, #LukeKenny and #ManuRishiChaddha."He added, "Principal shooting will commence on 10 Dec 2023 in #Mumbai, with some parts of the shoot in #Gujarat.#EkRukaHuaFaisla is written by #BarnaliRayShukla and produced by Dharnidhar Production [Anil Mewada and Chef Pranav Joshi] in association with Twenty21 Studios [Suryaveer Singh Bhullar and Dr Darshan Ashwin Trivedi]."The principal shooting of 'Ek Ruka Hua Faisla' will commence on December 10, 2023 in Mumbai with some parts of the shoot in Gujrat.Talking about remaking the cult classic, director Dr Darshan Ashwin Trivedi said, "Ek Ruka Hua Faisla is an exciting project. The film already has a legacy. The biggest challenge for me was to look at the movie from a fresh perspective in the current time. Without the Jury System, the film had to be positioned most believably. The narrative has been created after taking advice from law researchers. I am happy we have been able to work on the right approach. We have been able to put together a prolific ensemble cast. I am looking forward to the film."Describing the changes in the story and the sensibilities of the times, producer Anil Mevada said, "I have always been an avid film watcher, and after watching Ek Ruka Hua Faisla, I got fascinated with the idea of recreating this film for today's audience. I am very excited about how the script has shaped up and the excellent Cast we have on board. Our film will have an equal representation of the society. We have added women to the Commission, in place of 'only male jury' members in the film by Basu Chatterjee. ""Remaking a cult film is always a challenge, and a film like Ek Ruka Hua Faisla posed an even greater one. First and foremost, we had to make it relevant to today and then cast 12 actors who had to be on par as performers, as they were all going to be in every scene of the entire film. Casting director Kunal M Shah did a fabulous job putting this excellent Cast together. Looking forward to going on the floor with the film in December this year." Producer Chef Pranav Joshi adds, "When Anil shared the idea of remaking the cult film Ek Ruka Hua Faisla, I immediately jumped in with him and got in touch with Suryaveer and Darshan to set up this remake. Very excited with how the script has shaped up, and all 12 actors on board are brilliantly suited to each character," Producer Suryaveersingh Bhullar shared.'Ek Ruka Hua Faisla' is written by Barnali Ray Shukla, directed by Dr Darshan Ashwin Trivedi, and produced by Dharnidhar Production, Anil Mewada, and Chef Pranav Joshi in association with Twenty21 Studios - Suryaveer Singh Bhullar and Dr Darshan Ashwin Trivedi.Writer Barnali Ray Shukla has earlier written 'Thodi Life Thoda Magic' (2008), 'Kuch Love Jaisa' (2011), 'Miss Shoe - Bra Negi' (2012), 'Once Upon a Sky' (2020), 'All Is Well' (2021) and 'Joon' (2022).Darshan Ashwin Trivedi has earlier directed 'MrugTrushna', 'Mara Pappa SuperHero', Lakoiro, 'Keri', 'Aaj Jaane Ki Zidd Na Karo',among others.
The legendary director, Basu Chatterjee who has directed films like Priyatama, Rajnigandha, Ek Ruka Hua Faisla, and Chitchor passed away earlier today. He was also a screenwriter who made a name for himself in the regional industry with his Bengali films.According to the reports, Basu Chatterjee passed away due to age-related ailments at the age of 93. His last rites were performed today at 2 PM in Santacruz and the president of IFTDA, Ashoke Pandit, took to his Twitter to announce the tragic news. Gulabo Sitabo director, Shoojit Sircar also recalled his first job under Basu Chatterjee’s guidance as an assistant director.
Vidya Sinha, who lit up many of Basu Chatterjees rom-coms in the 1970s and 80s, is no more. She breathed here last in a hospital in Mumbai on August 15, the day of independence for our country and a bizarrely opportune time for Vidya to be freed of the burden of living. The last years were not kind to this pretty quiet dignified actress. The heroines roles had died out long ago and Vidya had switched to television where she played matronly roles in serials like Kkavyanjali, Qubool Hai , and Ishq Ka Rang Safed. But even the serials had stopped coming her way now. In 2009 Vidya had filed a police complaint against her second husband Netaji Bhimrao Sulunkhe accusing him of torture and extortion. She finally won a long court battle with her husband in 2011 for maintenance. Vidya had a short but glorious innings as a leading lady. She was a favourite with two filmmakers B R Chopra and Basu Chatterjee. With the formidable B R Chopra she did the memorable marital comedy Pati Patni Aur Woh as well as the disastrous love triangles Karm and Mukti (both produced by B R Chopra and directed by Chopras son-in-law Raj Tilak). It was Basu Chatterjee who gave Vidya her fleeting fling with fame. Chatterjee introduced Vidya in the arthouse hit Rajnigandha in 1974 and followed it up with another success Chotisi Baat.It is these two films that she is remembered by to this day. Vidya went on to do other films directed by Basuda, like Tumhare Liye (co-starring her Pati Patni Aur Woh leading man Sanjeev Kumar), and Safed Jhooth. But she did not find much success in cinema after her initial spurt of nominal arthouse stardom with her first two films. Curiously she worked with the biggest of directors during her brief spell of stardom in the 1970s, including Gulzar ( Kitaab, Meera ). But somehow her career never took off in a big way.Vidya once confessed she never took her career seriously. The truth is the reverse. Her career never took her seriously. Famous songs filmed on Vidya Balan Rajnigandha Phool Tumhare: Rajniganda Na Jaane Kyon Hota Hai Yun Zindagi Ke Saath: Chotisi Baat Jaan-E-Man Jaan-E-Man Mere Do Nayan: Chotisi Baat Tumhe Dekhti Hoon Toh Lagta Hai Aise: Tumhare Liye Thande Thande Pani Se Nahana Chahiye: Pati Patni Aur Woh
In the 1970s, part of the Golden Era of film music, one of Bollywood's most prolific filmmakers Basu Chatterjee would often force his songs into the background. Immortal melodies like 'Rajanigandha Phool Tumhare' (Rajnigandha), 'Na Jaane Kyon Hota Hai Yun Zindagi Je Saath' (Chotisi Baat), 'Yeh Din Kya Aaye Lage Phool Hanse' (Chotisi Baat), 'Yeh Jeevan Hai Iss Jeevan Ka Yehi Hai Rang-Roop' (Piya Ka Ghar) , Lata Mangeshkar's version of the tandem 'Rimjim Gire Saawan' (Manzil) and 'Tere Bin Kaise Din Beete Sajna' (Priyatama) were relegated to the background in Basu Chatterjee's films.
Says a very distinguished director, "Basu da was a great director. But he just didn't know how to use those beautiful songs. He would put them in the background because he was uncomfortable with lip-sync numbers."
A lot of progressive directors today feel the same way as Basu Chatterjee. Shoojit Sircar and Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra have decided not to have lip-sync songs in their films.
And composer A R Rahman is unhappy about this development.
Says the composing maestro, "A lot of my very good songs in films like Rang De Basanti and Delhi 6 were used as soundtracks in the background. They were not used as lip-sync. So the reach of those songs was just 30 or 40 percent of what it was meant to be."
A R Rahman feels songs lip-sync songs make a much greater impact. "Songs that are sung by major stars on screen get played in clubs and on radio. They make a psychological impact on the audiences' mind."
A R Rahman is looking for a more prominent outlet for his creativity. "One reason why I want to do music in young stories is because these films allow their actors to sing on screen."
For some time now, it has been a topic of discussion as to who would be replacing Nargis Fakhri in the film Shaukeen alongside Akshay Kumar. Now we hear that Lisa Haydon who was last seen in the recently released film Queen will be taking up the mantle of being the leading lady.
Shaukeen , a remake of Basu Chatterjee's 1982 hit, will see Lisa essaying the role of Akshay Kumar's girlfriend, whom three old men - played by Anupam Kher, Annu Kapoor and Piyush Mishra will be seen lusting after. Directed by Abhishek Sharma the film which is expected to go on floor this month is slated for release later this year.
Even as the remake of Shaukeen is being planned with Tigmanshu Dhulia scripting and Abhishek ( Tere Bin Laden ) Sharma directing the project, news comes that another Basu Chatterjee film, the 1979 comedy Baaton Baaton Mein featuring Amol Palekar and Tina Munim is all set to be directed by Shivum Nair Shivum has earlier directed Abhay Deol and Soha Ali Khan in the drama Ahista Ahista in 2006. Abhay, seen by many filmmakers as the new-age Amol Palekar is expected to step into Palekar's part while Yami Gautam is the replacement for Tina Munim in the Baaton Baaton Mein remake. Confirming these developments, producer Aditya Bhatia says, "Yes, we're doing a remake of Baaton Baaton Mein . The details are now being worked out." While admitting that Abhay Deol and Yami Gautam are the likely replacement actors in the remake Bhatia says, "We're still in the process of firming everything in." Interestingly, other Basu Chatterjee classics have been remade or are in the process of being remade. Sooraj Barjatya remade Basu Chatterjee's Chit Chor as Main Prem Ki Deewaani Hoon . Basuda's Shaukeen and Laakhon Ki Baat are also being remade.
Even before the remake of Basu Chatterjee's 1982 film Shaukeen could go on floor, the film seems to have hit rock bottom. Rumi Jaffrey, who was supposed to direct the film, has opted out of it.
Apparently, the reason for the sudden exit is said to be date clashes. Rumi, who was pretty kicked about the project revealed that the film got delayed to January instead of October and that, he had other commitments to fulfill. The writer-director also expressed his unhappiness over his exit from the remake and hopes that despite his absence, the film proves successful.
While the original starred Mithun Chakraborty and Rati Agnihotri, this one will have Akshay Kumar and Nargis Fakri reprising their roles.
Amol Palekar, Tina Munim starrer Baaton Baaton Mein (1979) is all set to join the league of remakes. This Bollywood classic was produced and directed by Basu Chatterjee and now reviving the same will be producer Aditya Bhhatia.
While Aditya has four leading directors on his wish list, nothing about the cast for the remake has been finalized. The original movie was not just famous for the simplicity and the innocence it reflected, but had some peppy and melodious numbers that still remains fresh in the minds of people. Since the remake is still in its initial stages, an official announcement about the cast and crew is expected soon.
While adapting books has been a common trend in Bollywood, here comes yet another adaptation. But this time it's from a famous series! Popular for being one of India's first detective series made by Basu Chatterjee, Byomkesh Bakshy, a fictional character created by Bengali writer Saradindu Bandyopadhyay is back!
Director Dibakar Banerjee has plans to direct and also co-produce the film titled Detective Byomkesh Bakshy with Yash Raj Films. "We are rebooting Byomkesh. Right back to his first ever case. We could have called this Byomkesh Begins. Everything else from now on will follow us," says Dibakar. The movie will be based on the backdrop of early 40s, and will revolve on the early life of Byomkesh i.e. his college life and how the detective came into being. The film will also have Byomkesh being pitted against the devil who is about to destroy the world. "It's his wits against the most villainous arch criminal the world has seen, in a world of murder, international political intrigue and seduction," says Banerjee.
Also, Dibakar has roped in Sushant Singh for the lead role of Byomkesh. "Sushant Singh Rajput has that dormant volcano thing about him that is just right for my Byomkesh." Says Dibakar of his leading man, "He looks so quiet, so self-absorbed and withdrawn - till you challenge him. Then he explodes and becomes the most dangerous man in the world - at least for the criminals."
The director however is still thinking over whether he will be making Detective Byomkesh Bakshy into a franchise. The film will go on floor in January next year and will release on 12th December 2014.
