"Started to refer me as...": Zeenat Aman reveals pet name Dev Anand gave her

5 Oct 2023

Zeenat Aman penned a note revealing the interesting story behind the name of her pet and also revealed what names 'Dev Saab' (Dev Anand) used to call her.Zeenat on Wednesday took to Instagram and shared a picture of herself in an all-white outfit along with a long note. The note read, "Childhood pet names can be sticky things. As a little girl, I was the apple of my father's eye, and he used to lovingly call me Babusha. A name that emerged as a go-between Babushka and Babugosha. He had quite the sense of humour because Babushka, which refers to an old Russian lady, and Babugosha, which refers to a pear, are hardly apt monikers for one's daughter!""My childhood friends, many of whose parents would socialise with my own, were quick to pick up on this nickname. In their mouths, Babusha evolved into Babs, which is how my earliest friends still know me," the actor continued. She also revealed what late actor Dev Anand used to call her, Zeenat added, "Later of course, Dev Saab started to refer to me as 'Zeenie', and then the media concocted 'Zeenie baby'. Both of which stuck. Now that I'm too old for younger people on set to refer to me as either of those, I'm also called ZA or Zee. "Home names" are such a wonderful sign of love and intimacy. I took a leaf out of my father's book, and both my boys received pet names soon after their birth. The older is Azaanchu, and the younger Zanuski. If you have an odd or funny or unique pet name, I'd love to hear the story behind it in the comments!"As soon as she uploaded the post, the actress's fans and industry friends chimed in the comment section.Kajol dropped red heart emojis. One of the users wrote, "You will always be 'Zeenie Baby' to many of us who watched your films in awe! A child in the 70's and a teen in the 80's, for me, you epitomized glamor! And now you're glorious!."Another commented, "Thanks for sharing this beautiful trivia. My dog is named Chiku and his picture will do justice to his name."Zeenat Aman made her Instagram debut in February. She keeps on sharing reflective thoughts on topics ranging from parenthood, the privacy of celebs, dyeing of hair and many more things.

Zeenat Aman to Amitabh Bachchan, celebs celebrate 100 years of Dev Anand

26 Sep 2023

Dev Anand on the occasion of his 100th birth anniversary. They celebrated 100 years of Dev Saab. From Zeenat Aman to Amitabh Bachchan shared special posts on their respective social media handles.Veteran actor Zeenat Aman shared stills from the film Hare Rama Hare Krishna on her Instagram handle and penned a lengthy note, Celebrating 100 years of Dev saab. Stylish, suave and prolific, he was a dynamo beyond compare. And what generosity of talent! He sparked careers (mine included), brought together creative heads, and made films that resonated across generations. She continued, It gladdens my heart to see his legacy honoured an entire century since his birth. In recent days, Ive been overwhelmed with requests for comments about him but there is little to add to what Ive already said. Though, I posted a three-part series about him just a few weeks ago, I cant resist the nostalgia of these two frames from our earliest films together. They will be instantly recognisable to my older followers, but Im not so sure about you younger lot!Kajol took to Instagram story and shared a portrait of Dev Saab. She captioned the post, Style beyond compare onscreen and off screen. Remembering Dev Sahab on his 100th anniversary.Sharing the still of her mother Sharmila Tagore and Dev Saab from their film, Saba Pataudi wrote, Happy 100th Birthday Anniversary #devanand ji.Megastar Amitabh Bachchan also remembered the legendary actor and posted a note on his X.The note read, After seeing the success of Film Heritage Foundations retrospective Dilip Kumar Hero of Heroes on the occasion of his birth centenary last year, I am delighted that four iconic Dev Anand films will be opening in cinemas across the country today in a manner that befits a legend of Indian cinema. He signified something that was endless, a continuity which we all took as a given. The fact that we can watch these films almost 70 years after the first one was released, is because they have been preserved and restored. This only reaffirms the importance of saving our films for future generations to enjoy. Dont miss the opportunity to watch Dev Anand back on the big screen this weekend. Filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar dropped a throwback picture with Dev Anand.Sharing the picture, he wrote, Happy birthday anniversary to Dev saab, an evergreen icon, who mesmerizes us even today with his charisma and timeless songs. His immeasurable contributions to Indian cinema and lasting legacy inspire generations. We miss you Dev saab..Dev Anand was born on September 26, 1923, and is considered one of the most successful actors in the Bollywood film industry. In a career spanning almost six decades, the actor created a mark with his roles in films like 'Guide,' 'Taxi Driver,' 'Jewel Thief' and 'CID'.He broke new grounds, playing a smuggler in 'Jaal,' absconding gang member in 'Dushman,' black marketeer in 'Kalabazaar' and a murderer in 'Bombay Ka Babu.Besides being an actor, he was also a writer, director, and producer known for his work in Hindi cinema. The late actor who received India's third-highest civilian award, Padma Bhushan took his last breath in his room at The Washington Mayfair Hotel in London at the age of 88 on December 3, 2011 (4 December 2011 I.S.T.).

Saira Banu shares funny moments of Dev Anand from sets of Pyar Mohabbat on his 100th birth anniversary

26 Sep 2023

Dev AnandSaira Banu penned a heartwarming note and shared some interesting moments.Taking to Instagram, Saira Banu dropped throwback pictures and clips of her and Dev Anand from one of their films.Banu revealed how her mother and actress Naseem Banu, was offered roles in Dev Anand's films CID and Kaala Pani but she had to decline due to other commitments. The note read, Happy 100th Birthday !In the 1955 film C.I.D" Dev Saab wanted to cast my mother Naseemji but at that time Sultan bhai and I were schooling in London and she had to be there with us, so she declined. Shakilaji did the same role. A similar thing happened in the 1958 film KAALA PAANI where Naseemjis role was then played by Nalini Jaywant. Sahib had described her as the Greatest Actress he ever worked with. We the family knew Dev Saab as an effervescent and friendly guy who loved all of us, be it Sahib, Naseemji, and myself. His favourite punch line was Hey! We must meet but that happened infrequently. The veteran actress also shared how Dev Saab was shy, withdrawn during shooting of Pyar Mohabbat on board songs, romantic and comedy scenes with a houseful of foreigner Tourist. For Shankar Mukerjis PYAAR MOHABBAT Saab and I were filming on a huge ship from Bombay to Aden, shooting on board songs, romantic and comedy scenes with a houseful of foreigner Tourist laden Europeans. The journey was for a couple of days and we were to finish our work in that time. Now, would you believe it, he was so withdrawn of this crowd of foreigners that on the first day he wanted to get accustomed to the idea of them being out there, Banu continued. She added, He was a shy, withdrawn person Dev Saab, he felt he had to get used to the faces of the crowd before starting the work. Shankar I have to relax and get used to the faces of these foreigners! The next day Shankarji and I ventured into his cabin and talked to him. I said, look you have to pick me up and throw me into the swimming pool and times running out soon, the ship will land at Aden in a days time and we must pack up! I got him out and it was smooth sailing since then.Banu stated, Fortunately Dev Saab would always forward a role to me in his film, one good example was GUIDE for which Ted Danielwski came to my mothers Nepean Sea Road House at Sea Belle to ask me for the film. At that time I was to do Mehboob Khans HABBA KHATOON , the story of the Kashmiri poetess and the role of Yusuf Chak, the Kashmiri prince was to be played by Sahib. This was my priority and so I had to decline GUIDE. I am happy about this because I feel I would have been too young to do this role. Similarly I could not do TEEN DEVIYAAN or JEWEL THIEF. Now, there's another funny incident with Dev Saab, I will write about it tomorrow.Earlier today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also remembered the iconic actor.Taking to X (formerly known as Twitter), PM Modi dropped a couple of pictures with the late veteran star and wrote, Dev Anand Ji is remembered as an evergreen icon. His flair for storytelling and passion for cinema were unmatched. His films not only entertained but also reflected the changing society and aspirations of India. His timeless performances continue to influence generations. "I was delighted to have his guidance," Zeenat Aman on 'Dev Saab'

26 Apr 2023

Complimenting Dev Anand's mentoring qualities, Zeenat said, "Dev saab was a dynamic mentor. Our association continued, and next on the cards was Ishk Ishk Ishk. I once again found myself in Nepal, but this time we were shooting in the picturesque lake town of Pokhara!"View this post on InstagramA post shared by Zeenat Aman (@thezeenataman)She added, "Those of you who have seen the film know that it features a bevy of lovely women as my sisters and friends. They were literally so, because prior to the shoot Dev saab asked if I had any "model friends" who could join the project. I put the word out, several friends answered my call, and so it was quite the party in Pokhara. With a good-looking and young cast and crew, it should be no surprise that there were plenty of dalliances and heartbreaks unfolding behind the scenes. But please don't expect the gossipy details from me! Would you like the world to know about your every crush, humiliation or affair?"Zeenat has lot more to say. "Anyway, Dev saab was on a roll. Working with him was seamless and joyful. He was a fount of creative energy, and I was delighted to have his guidance. It would have been easy for him to tie me down to a contract, but he had the grace to never even suggest it. Thus allowing me a chance to spread my wings. We also starred together in several films made by other directors such as Darling, Darling and Kalabaaz. My career was booming, fresh offers were pouring in, but alas, one of these, led to the first and only misunderstanding between Dev saab and myself..."Like a series, Zeenat's post ended on a cliffhanger. She wrote in the postscript, "( I will try to complete this story tomorrow or day after. Meanwhile, this picture is from the set of Ishk Ishk Ishk, and if I may say so myself, it is incredibly stylish!)"Fans showered love on her post. One wrote, "Feeling Nostalgia after reading your stories". Another one wrote, "Reading your post makes my day, they are well articulated."

Zeenat Aman remembers her first meeting with Dev Anand and how she bagged 'Hare Krishna, Hare Rama'

25 Apr 2023

She added, "It was 1970, and I think O P Ralhan was feeling quite sorry for me. He had given me a bit part in Hulchul, it had made little impact, and I was already packing my bags to relocate to Malta with my mother and stepfather.""Oh, but the saga doesn't end here. My family was ready to depart the country, but Dev saab persuaded my mother and I to delay our travels. So instead we flew to Kathmandu, stayed at the famous Soaltee Hotel, and waited long days to be called to set to shoot! I was frothing at the bit by the time it was finally time for my scenes. The first of which was a bus sequence. It makes me laugh to watch it now because I know I'm practically spitting out my lines in my impatience to prove myself! In those days it took much longer to make a film from start to finish. Two or three years even. My mother and I once again prepared to leave Mumbai, and yet again Dev Saab persuaded us to stay. He promised to edit quickly and get the movie into the cinemas. Sure enough, the film released, it became a huge hit, and I became a star.My immigration plans were now indefinitely postponed, and Dev Saab started writing another script with me in mind...(More tomorrow.)," she concluded.Zeenat played a drug addict who eventually takes her own life in the 1971 film 'Hare Rama Hare Krishna', a musical drama by Dev Anand starring himself as Zeenat's brother. Zeenat played the role of nomadic Janice in the hit film. It had many iconic songs, including 'Dum Maaro Dum', and 'Phoolon Ka Taaron Ka'.

How Asha Bhosle sang the drug anthem Dum Maro Dum instead of Lata Mangeshkar

9 Oct 2020

Believe it or not, the drug anthem Dum Maro Dum Mit Jaye Gham from Hare Rama Hare Krishna was to be sung by Lata Mangeshkar! At least that was composer Rahul Dev Burmans original plan. But then the films producer-director-leading man Dev Anand, who had a keen ear for music, suggested Asha Bhosle for Dum Maro Dum.Lata sang two beautiful solos Phoolon Ka Taaron Ka, Ho Ho Re Ghungroo and a lovely duet Kanchi Re for me in Hare Rama Hare Krishna. Dum Maro Dum didnt seem right for her, Dev Saab told me.Thats how Asha stepped in. Even after her sterling singing the song almost didnt make it into the film. When Dev Anand heard Dum Maro Dum he told RD he found it strange and decided to drop it from the film. In a panic RD pleaded to at least let the song be part of the films soundtrack album, if not part of the film.Eventually Dum Maro Dum was filmed and became one of the biggest hits of RD and Ashas career. Ashaji once told me Dum Maro Dum was the most requested song at her live concerts after Oh Mere Sona Re (Teesri Manzil).

Milap Zaveri to write and direct dark thriller produced by Nikkhil Advani

28 Oct 2017

A couple of weeks back we had reported that writer director Milap Zaveri had been roped in to pen the dialogues for the next instalment in the Hate Story franchise. Well, now we hear that Milap will also be writing and directing yet another film that will be produced by Nikkhil Advani under the banner Emmay Entertainment. Going by what we hear, the said film that Milap will write and direct will be a dark film based on a cop. If that wasnt all we also hear that John Abraham will be seen in the lead role. Word also has it that another actor will be joining the cast of the film. Apparently, Milap had narrated an idea to Nikkhil which the latter liked and requested Milap to develop a script based on the same. An official confirmation on the same is awaited and the film is expected to go on floors in January next year.

Mamta Kulkarnis husband arrested by Thane police

26 Apr 2017

Popular actress of the 90s Mamta Kulkarni who was last seen in the Dev Anand film Censor has over the years had her run-ins with the law. Now we hear that the Thane police have arrested Vicky in what is being considered as the largest drugs bust in recent times. Apparently, the Thane police have named Vicky as one of the masterminds in the large consignment of drugs which was seized amounting to approximately 18,627 kg of ephedrine (a medicine abused to make Crystal Meth), worth over Rs 2,000 crore. While the police have arrested five people which includes two from the now defunct unit of pharmaceutical company Avon in Solapur, it is learnt that Vicky had met Punit, one of the other masterminds, in 2013. Post this meeting Vicky had been routing drugs from the US through Gujarat into various cities of India.

Bahubali 2 not affected by producers IT raid, says Bahubali writer

14 Nov 2016

The prolific and much-revered screenwriter K. V. Vijayendra Prasad who has scripted Bahubali and its forthcoming follow-up Bahubali: The Conclusion says the income-tax raid on the films producers Shobhu Yarlagadda and Prasad Devineni does not in any way hamper the shooting and release of the eagerly-awaited Bahubali sequel which releases on 28 April 2017. Not at all! In fact we were shooting throughout Friday when the raids were carried out. This eventuality does not affect our film in any way, asserts Vijayendra who also happens to be the Bahubali director S S Rajamoulis father. The writer continues, You must understand that all financial transaction in the Indian film industry are now made through cheques. At least I can speak about the financial dealings regarding Bahubali and its sequel with authority. All the expenditure is by cheque and accounted for. No cash payments were made at any point during the shooting. He feels the impact of Narendra Modis demonetization is more psychological than practical. People in the country panicked when the announcement was made suddenly. The cash crunch hit the common man, which is sad. But I feel the Prime Ministers surprise move is meant for the larger good and we must bear some inconvenience for the sake of the nation. When coaxed Vijayendra Prasad also threw light on the breathlessly anticipated Bahubali sequel. We will complete the film in December and then the post-production will begin. We are not bogged down by expectations, because we did not decide to do another film after the success of Bahubali. The script for the second Bahubali film was completed simultaneously with the first film. Not that there is no changes and tweaking. Of course! We cant be inflexible about art. Of course my son wants changes as we shoot along. Vijayendra Prasad says he doesnt go on the sets every day. But I go periodically to see what changes are required. And we incorporate them accordingly. Bahubali is a creation of collaborative cooperation. All of us are committed to do the two films before we move on. The leading man Prabhas had so many attractive offers from Bollywood and elsewhere after Bahubali released in July last year. He turned all of them down as he has committed three years of his life and career to Bahubali and its sequel. Vijayendra discounts any possibility of a third Bahubali film. We planned it as two films. Bahubali: The Conclusion is the companion film. After that we are done. The prolific screenwriter is also busy doing a sequel to his son Rajamoulis Rowdy Rathore and Shankars Naayak , the latter in Hindi and featuring Anil Kapoor again. He will also turn director with a film entitled Kabir based on the demolition of the Babri Masjid which Pahlaj Nihalani will produce. Its not a controversial subject at all. Its not anti-BJP. Its about national integration, assures Vijayendra Prasad.
