"Main daant deti hu fir sabko...": Konkona Sensharma on dealing with invasion of privacy

13 Jan 2024

privacy is challenging in today's world where social media, technology, and the internet have made everything smaller. And if you are a celebrity, things are more difficult for you. Nothing can be kept secret in this era of extreme paparazzi culture. However, Konkona Sensharma deals with it differently. In a recent interview with ANI, she spoke about the invasion of privacy and how she handles it.Recalling an incident, she shared, "I was crossing the road with my child and somebody asked for a selfie ...so I had to say you have to have some idea of context...main daant deti hu fir sabko...thoda bhaut nicely only (Then I scold everyone...a little bit, very nicely)"The actor has been part of movies like 'Page 3'. It is about tabloid journalism, gossip, and celebrities, and their lives. Konkona received a positive response for her performance in the film but in real life, she is completely different and never on Page 3 or doing an airport look.Talking about the same, she replied, "I go to the airport all the time but what happens is unless you are a very big star or an A-lister paps are following you or I believe the PR companies pay the paps...that I did not bother"She added, "I am not modest I am sensible. They may recognise me but I love the people who have liked my work because I found them to be very sophisticated. People who have come up to me...I won't even call them fans ...there are people who admire my work who come up to me... very politely they tell me that they like my work and it is lovely."Konkona made her debut as a child artist in the film 'Indira'. She garnered the attention of the audience with her film 'Mr. and Mrs. Iyer'. She forayed into Hindi cinema with the drama 'Page 3', and won two consecutive Filmfare Awards for Best Supporting Actress for her performances in 'Omkara' (2006) and 'Life in a... Metro'. She also worked in movies like '15 Park Avenue', 'Dosar', 'Laaga Chunari Mein Daag', 'Luck By Chance', 'Wake Up Sid', 'Atithi Tum Kab Jaoge?', among others.Currently, she is part of the crime series 'Killer Soup'. Directed by Abhishek Chaubey the series stars Manoj Bajpayee, Konkona Sensharma, Nasser, Sayaji Shinde, Lal, Anbuthasan, Anula Navlekar and Kani Kusruti in pivotal roles. The series revolves around Swathi Shetty a budding cook who wishes for the entire world to enjoy her soup. One mishap kicks off a chain reaction of accidents and frantic cover-ups that find her and her partner in hot water.

"I don't think about awards...": Konkona Sensharma on receiving accolades for her work

13 Jan 2024

Konkona Sensharma, who has received several accolades for her outstanding performances, believes in focusing on her work and not thinking about awards.in an interview with ANI the actor who has won two National Film Awards said, "I don't think you think about awards at all. The thing is that you have to like the work, otherwise, you can't do the work. You have to respect the work. And you don't have to be attached to the outcome. And I never was because when I was younger I didn't want to be an actor. Only much later, that time I had nothing to prove. I was not thinking at that time, this film has to work, I have to make it, I was like they are asking me to do and I just do it properly, I must remember my lines and be on time and do my thing. I'll try my best to do it properly. This was it."Konkona has worked with big stars including Ranbir Kapoor in 'Wake Up Sid' and Ajay Devgn in 'Atithi Tum Kab Jaoge?'. In 'Omkara' she shared screen space with actors such as Ajay Devgn, Kareena Kapoor, Saif Ali Khan, Vivek Oberoi and Bipasha Basu. She shared her experience of working with ensemble cast and other senior actors. "I have not acted with Mr Bachchan and barely with Nasir (Naseeruddin Shah) even though I adore him."On working with an ensemble cast like in 'Omkara' and if she was confident at that time, she added, "I was thinking of 'Omkara' because there were established stars of that time. Yeah, that's true but you know. I was like they have asked me to do it and I just have to learn my lines."Konkona made her debut as a child artist in the film 'Indira'. Metro'. "I'm an accidental actor": Konkona Sensharma

13 Jan 2024

Konkona Sensharma has enthralled the audience with her wide variety of acting roles. She has also impressed moviegoers with her directorial stints 'A Death in the Gunj' and a segment of 'Lust Stories 2'. However, she never thought of becoming an actor and later a director in her life. She went with the flow and eventually landed in filmmaking. She told ANI, "I'm primarily an actor. I had no plans to direct. I had no plans to be an actor. I'm reluctant, I used to be. I'm an accidental actor."She continued, "Because I didn't want to be an actor. I later became. I got good work. People appreciated my work. I found that I'm spending so much time in Bombay (Mumbai). I might as well take a house, or rent an apartment and at least see how it goes. I always have this thing. I'm very non-committal by nature. I like to see, let's see how it's going. And then we'll decide. I can never plan. I don't know what I am doing next weekend."'A Death In The Gunj' is a 2016 drama film written and directed by Konkona Sensharma.Recalling her working experience in the film and what all tips she got from her mother, veteran film director and screenwriter Aparna Sen, the actor shared, "I used to call her (Aparna Sen) every day with a list of questions. Some of it was also researched to be fair because... it was set in McCluskieganj, in 1979 and there was not a lot of material available on McCluskieganj...""We did get into some research, but a lot of it was based on talking to my parents and talking to their friends... 'Did you have running hot water? Who were the Anglo Indians who lived there...where did you guys go'....many questions were asked about that world and what is so interesting when you rely on memory. Memory is a very tricky thing because people remember it differently. So my dad would be like no, but this was something over there and my mom, Oh! I thought it was something', so it's very nice, actually was lovely because it's almost magical and it's part of fiction."Though Konkona was reluctant initially to foray into direction, she said that being on the sets was helpful for her."I think just being on sets is very helpful. I would recommend it to anybody who is starting their career in films or behind the scenes or whatever because film sets are such chaotic environments, that it may seem to a layperson to be a very disorganized space. There are 100-200 persons depending on the scale of the production. It's not a very stable easy to understand environment. The more comfort you have on a set, I feel, the more beneficial it is to you. As an actor, you also get the sense of a camera, you will know the whole world."After being part of cinema for so long and depicting distinct roles onscreen, the actor shared that she always prefers to do relatable roles."It has to be relatable to me," she said while talking about the criteria before choosing a role or project.Konkona made her debut as a child artist in the film 'Indira'. Metro'. From mental health to toxic masulinity - Konkona Sensharma opens up on making political statements through her films

13 Jan 2024

Konkona Sensharma has also showcased her directorial abilities in projects like 'A Death in the Gunj' and 'The Mirror'.Be it as an actor or as a director, Konkana focuses on several social issues and her unrestricted film selection, which is filled with challenging topics, has gained her significant awards. In an exclusive interview with ANI, Konkana opened up on making political statements through her films. "The ones which I have directed, I think it's very clear, the issues I am speaking of, on class, politics, desire or you know the mental health or toxic masculinity those things are very evident in the 'Death in the Gunj' and 'Mirror'. Those kind of politics is very evident in that sense."The 'Wake Up Sid' actor, who has starred in hard-hitting films like 'The Rapist' and 'Mr and Mrs Iyer', talked about her mother - actor-director-writer Aparna Sen and how she used to write about current affairs and social issues.Konkana told ANI, "When I was growing up, my mum I think she had largely transitioned into being a director and editor of a women's magazine. There was a very popular women's magazine and she used to write editorials herself on all kinds of current affairs and women's issues."Asked if she (Aparna Sen) was politically active, Konkana said, "Ya...she thinks about issues and she writes about whatever she feels strongly about. So I did not actually see the years of her being a mainstream commercial actress."Aparna Sen has done among others films like Ghawre Bairey Aaj (The Home and the World, Today), Parama and Sati. The actor said that not many people are aware that her granduncle was Jibanananda Das. "...He was a very well-known poet. Most people don't know it. Also, they were in Brahmo Samaj which was a reform movement...my great-grandparents were missionaries."Konkona is currently seen in the crime thriller series 'Killer Soup' which also stars Manoj Bajpayee in the lead role.Directed by Abhishek Chaubey, the series revolves around Swathi Shetty (played by Konkona) a budding cook who wishes for the entire world to enjoy her soup. One mishap kicks off a chain reaction of accidents and frantic cover-ups that find her and her partner in hot water.'Killer Soup' is currently streaming on OTT platform Netflix.

"I was far cooler than Aisha, amazed by love I still receive": Konkona Sensharma reflects on 'Wake Up Sid'

13 Jan 2024

"I am always amazed by the love I get for 'Wake Up Sid.' I can't tell you, for Aisha Banerjee, for the 'Ektara' song, people are still sending me DMs. They are singing 'Ektara' and saying, 'This is for you, Konkona.' It's very touching. I appreciate it because I haven't done commercial films like that," Konkona said.Konkona went on to discuss how much she related to her character from the movie, Aisha Banarjee, an aspiring writer. "I thought I was far cooler than Aisha, but I liked working on that because Ayan Mukerji, who was the director and writer, was only 25-26. He was such a good writer-director, and the script was so nuanced. He had thought through everything so well. It was a delight to work with Ranbir and Ayan. They were already friends," Konkona said.Konkona praised her co-star Ranbir Kapoor, who has been to a film school and possessed the technical knowledge of camera placement."I was asking something to Anil Mehta, who is a famous DOP and Ranbir answered finally. I was really impressed about his camera knowledge," Konkona added.Recently, Konkona and Ranbir collaborated on an ad that evoked many memories and prompted fans to ask for a sequel to the Ayan Mukerji directorial.Ranbir Kapoor was last seen in Sandeep Reddy Vanga's 'Animal,' while Konkona is featuring in 'Killer Soup' with Manoj Bajpayee, streaming on an OTT platform.

"Aise kaise likh sakte hai?" Real story inspired Konkona Sensharma's 'Lust Stories 2'

13 Jan 2024

Konkona Sensharma has also showcased her directorial abilities in projects like 'The Mirror,' a segment in 'Lust Stories 2', which stands out for its subtle portrayal of sexuality through a feminine perspective. In an interview with ANI, Konkona discussed how a real-life story inspired her for the project in which she addresses themes like sexuality, desire and class differences in society through the prism of lust. "It's not like I went with a plan to direct it. Ashi Dua, my wonderful producer, came to me and said, 'Will you do Lust stories?' and I was like, I don't have a story, give me a few months. If I can come up with a story, I'll do it; otherwise, I won't do it.' She said, 'You'll come up and so I was looking for.' So, I had lust on my mind, looking for lust stories, and you don't want to just clean lust because it will be a little boring because anybody knows lust. So I wanted to mix it with motherhood or something interesting." 'The Mirror' is a story of Ishita (Tillotama Shome), a graphic designer in her early 40s, who lives alone and suffers from frequent migraines. One afternoon, Ishita walks in to find the househelp Seema (Amruta Subhash), having sex with her husband, Kamal (Shrikant Yadav) on the bed. Instead of following convention and firing the help, Ishita dons the role of a voyeur and starts arriving home on time to watch the couple have sex.Konkona shared how she got the idea from a real-life story. "I heard this real-life story. My friend who lives on her own came back one day and encountered a situation like this herself, the bai, except there was no conversation; she put her hand out, the bai put the key, and the story ended."But I just was putting myself in that situation thinking that, how do you deal with the situation? I might just run if I run out because, oh my God, with the shock, you just run out. I have this habit, me and my girlfriends, we chat on the phone a lot. So if I had been just talking to her, I would just call it back ... we would discuss it. And then I just kept imagining this, and it just kept playing out like this. I imagined it like this, and I found even when my friend narrated that story of the real-life anecdote, I found everything is already there in this situation." "Also I didn't want to get into the morality of it. I felt both (the characters) were transgressing, both were doing something wrong. I think it would have been a very different reaction if she had not been a bai (help) and someone else. What you can get away with by saying to your bai (maid)"When Tillotama Shome says, 'it's my word against yours, and who will believe you over me,' is something we all know. And does she not know how her maid is living, as we all know what chawls are like in Mumbai?," Konkona said."And I know the Ishitas (Tillotama's character) of the world would be watching it, not the Seemas of the world. So, you enter the film with Ishita, you encounter it from here, so you have all the time and space to go and get your shock and disgust out of the way. And then you can just complicate that further. And then we go into Seema's chawl and then we see how she's living...." On talking about sexuality in older women or different strata or senior love and how people look at it, the 44-year-old actor said, "Firstly, I wanted to say women in any class or society can barely acknowledge their own desires. Tillotama's character says those things to her. You know, the conversations they have. I wanted it to be just said out loud because we have normalized it, and we are forgetting we are normalizing it. We're not humanizing some people, and that's not right." However, Konkona said that it was not easy for her to write the story and that she did not think so far ahead to dwell on questions like whether people were ready or not to accept such a provocative "chi chi" topic."I honestly, I never thought of that. I never thought so far ahead. I shocked myself when we were writing it. I was like aise kaise likh sakte hai," Konkona said in the interview with ANI.The actor said her thought process was "My God ... we will write this.. there so much will do. I scandalized myself only, but I found it a very exciting and almost dangerous idea, and I never thought are people ready or not ready to accept it? I was surprised that so many people showed it so much exactly, yes, you're right, but there must be some sections who I don't know. Maybe don't like like it.Asked about the concept of presenting "senior love" as well as potraying sex in artistic manner and not just the yesteryear crude technique of using two flowers or eyes to depict love and leave it to the audience to deduce the scene, Konkona said she intended her films to be more than skin show. "But I don't want to titillate anybody. I'm not interested in providing any kind of arousal, you can do that for yourself. It's available everywhere... I'm actually talking about other issues... How we treat other human beings and how much we live in denial because, when the two women have that fight, it could have been very easily solved."Referring to 'Mirror' in 'Lust Stories 2', Konokona said, "... Tillotama said Yeah, I used to watch you. Amrita said Yeah... I know you used to watch me. Actually they are in sync, they have a perfect thing going, she likes to watch, she likes to be watched..but not the husband." Incidentally, in another segment in Lust Story anthology, actor Neena Gupta essays the role of a grandmother who encourages conversations on sex. On filmmaker Karan Johar who has praised Konkona for her phenomenal direction skills in 'Lust Stories 2' she said, "It shows the generosity of his spirit." Konkona whose repertoire includes 'Page 3', 'Omkara', '15 Park Avenue', 'Luck By Chance', 'Wake Up Sid,' among others is currently part of the Netflix crime series 'Killer Soup,' directed by Abhishek Chaubey. The series stars Manoj Bajpayee, Nasser, Sayaji Shinde, Lal, Anbuthasan, Anula Navlekar, and Kani Kusruti in pivotal roles. The series revolves around Swathi Shetty, a budding cook who wishes for the entire world to enjoy her soup. One mishap kicks off a chain reaction of accidents and frantic cover-ups that find her and her partner in hot water.

Konkona Sensharma catches herself doing this "deadly thing" in real life while rehearsing her film role

13 Jan 2024

Konkona Sensharma, who is lapping up praise for her role in the just released web series, 'Killer Soup' says she has caught herself behaving like the characters she plays and once professed her feelings to a guy in real life just because the character she was playing in the film was doing so. In an interview with ANI, the actor recounts, "A few years ago, when my character was going to profess some feelings to some guy, I also decided to let me do that in real life. There was absolutely no need to do this but I kind of did it because I wanted to just revise that feeling of insecurity. i just wanted to cheat really.""I love it when your self leaks into your characters...It must be working differently for different characters ...otherwise it would get repetitive...," said the two time National Film award winning actor."I love it because when you're shooting on a set, it's so disjointed that you are just somehow creating that reality with yourself and your co-actor... Sometimes the co-actor is not there in front of you or your acting to a mark and there are so many people around you...it's an exercise in willpower and imagination," Konkona said. The 'Wake up Sid' actor spoke about choosing to play relatable characters. "I feel like first, the character has to be relatable to me. And if I can find that portal of connection with my character, then I feel and trust that others will also connect. I feel that everything is already within us; all the emotions are already within us. For different characters, you bring out different aspects of yourself. We've all known love, loss, betrayal, death, and anger for different reasons."I'm an intuitive kind of person," said the actor adding, "Whatever acting I try to do is largely through instinct. I can never plan a performance.""I never plan ki aaj main jakar ye karungi ...woh toh mujhse hota hi nahin hai...what happens is if you are taken with something it's in your mind ..." said Konkona whose repertoire includes films like 'Page 3', 'Luck by Chance', 'Atithi Tum Kab Jaoge' and 'Omkara'.She bagged a National Film Award for best actress for her role in 'Mr and Mrs Iyer' and the National Film Award for Best Supporting actress for her role in 'Omkara'. Konkona's recent release, 'Killer Soup', directed by Abhishek Chaubey, stars Manoj Bajpayee, , Nasser, Sayaji Shinde, Lal, Anbuthasan, Anula Navlekar, and Kani Kusruti in pivotal roles. The series revolves around Swathi Shetty, a budding cook who wishes for the entire world to enjoy her soup. One mishap kicks off a chain reaction of accidents and frantic cover-ups that find her and her partner in hot water. Produced by Chetana Kowshik and Honey Trehan, 'Killer Soup' is available on Netflix.

"Not my space...did not grow up watching them": Konkona Sensharma on commercial films

13 Jan 2024

Konkona Sensharma has been a part of the entertainment industry for a long time. She has impressed the audience with performances in films such as 'Wake Up Sid', 'Mr and Mrs Iyer', 'Luck by Chance', 'Lipstick Under My Burkha', and 'Talvar'.In an exclusive interview with ANI, she talked about commercial films and the kind of movies she likes to be part of."..I don't think commercial (cinema) because that's not my space. I don't relate to it myself because I didn't grow up watching it. So I don't have that kind of nostalgia or attachment or some childhood memory to it, either. I would like to be part of films like- Mira Nair's films. I feel at home in 'Monsoon Wedding' or 'Namesake' or like those kind of films one feels at home like in my mother's films."Konkona's portrayal of Aisha Banerjee in the much-acclaimed film 'Wake Up Sid' is still cherished for her nuanced performance.Konkona spoke about the overwhelming love she still receives for 'Wake Up Sid' a movie that has aged like fine wine."I am always amazed by the love I get for 'Wake Up Sid.' I can't tell you, for Aisha Banerjee, for the 'Ektara' song, people are still sending me DMs. They are singing 'Ektara' and saying, 'This is for you, Konkona.' It's very touching. "He is very sweet," Konkona Sensharma on her pairing with "living legend" Manoj Bajpayee

13 Jan 2024

Konkona Sensharma recently shared her experience of working with actor Manoj Bajpayee for the first time in the crime thriller web series 'Killer Soup'.Talking exclusively to ANI, Konkona said, "So lovely...actually, I have been an admirer of his work for a very long time. If you look at his body of work, it's very intimidating...he has done fantastic films...you know 'Gangs Of Wasseypur', 'Satya', 'Bandit Queen'...iconic films. It's intimidating as he is an intense, serious kind of person but 'aisa nahi hai voh' he is not like that. He is very sweet."Directed by Abhishek Chaubey the series stars Manoj BajpayeeKonkona Sensharma, Nasser, Sayaji Shinde, Lal, Anbuthasan, Anula Navlekar and Kani Kusruti in pivotal roles. The series revolves around Swathi Shetty (played by Konkona) a budding cook who wishes for the entire world to enjoy her soup. One mishap kicks off a chain reaction of accidents and frantic cover-ups that find her and her partner in hot water. The major dark humour in the series comes from Manoj Bajpayee, said Konkona. On working with director Abhishek Chaubey in 'Killer Soup' she told ANI, "I was really looking forward to working with him ever since his first film 'Ishqiya'. Then he made so many... 'Dedh Ishqiya', 'Sonchiriya', 'Udta Punjab' and so many others ...even his short films. I really like his work. Somehow I really resonate with his work. I have known him for so many years. He used to be in Vishal Bhardwaj's team. So even when I was doing 'Omkara'. I knew him for a long time."Konkona also called the 'Gangs of Wasseypur' actor "a living legend".She said, "You know I was dying to work with Abhishek and then of course this is with Manoj Bajpayee who is a living legend. I doing such fantastic work and you know both Manoj and I have been in this industry for more than 20 years and somehow we have never worked together. It's so strange.""Somehow professionally, our paths have not crossed. We just bumped into each other socially. I think we have always liked each other's work. In fact, I love his work. This is the first time we are actually working together...it's romantic pairing. Actually, it's crime, romance, dark humour... so it's very interesting mix of things," she added. The actor said that after a series of morally upright she was happy to play a "baddie" portraying a "quiet grey" character. Earlier she had played an out-and-out grey character in 2013 horror flick 'Ek thi Daayan'.'Killer Soup' is currently streaming on the OTT platform Netflix.
