Anurag Thakur announces two schemes to incentivize shooting of foreign films in India

18 May 2022

Earlier on Wednesday, Thakur inaugurated the India Pavilion at Cannes Film Market 'Marche du Film' and said that Indian cinema is a story of human talent, triumph and the trajectory of New India."While reflecting the values, beliefs, and experiences of the Indian people, Indian cinema has also showcased their hopes, dreams and achievements. While being rooted in Indian culture, the Indian film industry has grown to acquire a universal character. And while preserving our age-old stories, the Indian filmmakers are innovating in their art of storytelling through use of technology," the Minister added."Indian cinema is not only the story of a 6000-year-old civilisation, not only the story of 1.3 billion tales but also the story of human talent, triumph and the trajectory of New India narrated through your lens," he added. Paraphrasing a dialogue from the movie 'Yeh Jawani Hai Diwani, the minister said, "Bharat ka cinema, daurna chahta hai, udna chahta hai, bass rukna nahi chahta."He said that through the beautiful journey Indian cinema has inspired global filmmakers and also been inspired by them and 2020s are the best time to make art and films in India.Speaking on the strong intent of the Government to make India a favorite filming destination, Thakur said, "We have a strong intellectual property regime, and the digital medium now complements the other more established modes of consumption and dissemination such as theatres and movies. This has brought about a democratisation of consumer choice like never before, and our government is intent on preserving this via support to the creative industries."Crediting our film restoration work for its scale, the minister said the Government has embarked on the world's largest film restoration project under the National Film Heritage Mission and as part of this drive, 2200 movies across languages and genres will be restored to their former glory. He further said that India Pavilion is a feather in "our cap and only with your Vishwas and Prayas today, it will become the pioneer of the Indian dream tomorrow".Anurag Thakur on Tuesday led the largest-ever Indian official delegation of eleven celebrities walking together on the inaugural event at the Cannes Film Festival. Mame Khan became the first-ever folk artist to open a Red Carpet for the Indian contingent.

Black Widow skips theatrical release in India; to release directly on Disney+ Hotstar

15 Jul 2021

Updated: Jul 15, 2021 - 6:55 PM IST The Marvel Cinematic Universe has a fan following worldwide and India is no exception. Not just the Avengers film but even films on individual superheroes have done very well on the big screen, that too in multiple languages. Hence, the excitement was tremendous for the release of Black Widow, starring Scarlett Johansson. The film was all set to release last year, on April 30, 2020. But due to the Covid-19 pandemic, it was delayed repeatedly. Finally, it was released in cinemas in the USA, UK and other markets on July 9. Since most theatres are shut in India, the trade was hoping that itll find a release later on when the situation normalizes. However, the industry and trade were left surprised when Disney+ Hotstar announced that Black Widow will be out on their platform soon. Some in the trade felt that the film would arrive on OTT after completing its theatrical release. But Bollywood Hungama has learnt that Black Widow wont make it to the big screen in India.A source said, Black Widow was supposed to be released in India in cinemas. But due to the prevailing situation, no one knows when the cinemas would be open and whether people would turn up to see the film. Hence, the decision was taken to release it directly on Disney+ Hotstar. That way, viewers in India would be able to see it officially. The buzz for the film is tremendous among the audiences here. It's sure to get a huge viewership. When asked when Black Widow will be out on Disney+ Hotstar in India, the source said, The Disney team in India will take a call on this soon. But its expected to be out only in the second half of August. An announcement should happen before the end of July. It is also said that the English version of the film will be available for those who have bought the Disney+ Hotstar Premium plan.A trade expert sighs, Last month, when cases had reduced and the state of Maharashtra had gone for a level-based unlock plan, there was excitement in the trade. We were confident that Hollywood biggies would bring in audiences and motivated by the response to these films, Bollywood filmmakers would follow suit. Black Widow was one of those films that we were all banking upon. But now therell be one less film that will come out in cinemas.More than a spy. More than an Avenger. Its time to tell her story. Marvel Studios' Black Widow has earned more than $170 million worldwide till date. It has also simultaneously been released on Disney+ Premiere, a pay-per-view platform, in several countries wherein it reportedly earned around $60 million worldwide.
