Bunty Aur Babli 2s advance booking yet to open fully due to show sharing issues with Sooryavanshi

18 Nov 2021

The comic caper, Bunty Aur Babli 2, is all set to release tomorrow, that is, Friday, November 19. It's Thursday afternoon right now and less than 24 hours remain for the first show to commence. Yet, moviegoers are surprised as the advance bookings in certain cinema halls have still not opened, mainly in the single screens. Bollywood Hungama has found out that this is due to show sharing issues that have unexpectedly cropped up.A source told Bollywood Hungama, It is kind of a d j vu of what happened exactly two weeks back. At that time, one of the issues was with regards to the division of shows between Sooryavanshi and the Hollywood film, Eternals. With Sooryavanshi running very successfully even on the weekdays in Week 2, the makers of the film have asked exhibitors to continue playing the film in the third week as well with 2 or 3 shows. Yash Raj Films (YRF), the producers of Bunty Aur Babli 2, has also meanwhile asked for 3 shows a day in single-screen theatres. As a result, exhibitors are now trying to figure out how to find a solution to this situation. The source further said, Sooryavanshi has already completed two weeks but is still doing well in many properties, particularly in Maharashtra and Gujarat. Maharashtra, meanwhile, has 50% occupancy and one of the reasons why many have still not seen the film is that they didnt get tickets earlier. So a chunk of viewers will be watching the film in the third weekend. So its obvious that the makers of the film want cinemas to keep playing the film with a sufficient number of shows. They are also probably are looking at crossing the Rs. 200 crore mark for which Maharashtra will play a significant role. And thats not all. The source said, A Marathi film, Jhimma, is also releasing tomorrow in cinemas. It carries great buzz and is also in a way the first major Marathi theatrical release after March 2020. So the theatres located in areas where Marathi films do well need to accommodate Jhimma along with Sooryavanshi and Bunty Aur Babli 2. Hence, its no surprise that even Jhimmas advance hasnt started everywhere. However, a trade expert assures that theres nothing to worry about, Its not a hair-tearing situation like the one during Diwali, before the release of Sooryavanshi. All the concerned parties are working towards finding a consensus. The advance bookings will start everywhere from today evening for sure.

Just a day left for Sooryavanshi to release but the issues still remain unsolved; ANGER builds up among exhibitors and moviegoers

4 Nov 2021

Bollywood Hungama was the first one to report on Monday, November 1, that the advance booking of Sooryavanshi and Eternals has not opened in multiplex chains like Inox, PVR and Cinepolis. This is because the multiplex owners and the studios backing these two films are not able to reach on a common ground on issues like revenue and show sharing. However, the mood was unfazed. After all, everyone expected that these issues will crop up. But at the same time, it was also expected that it would be resolved by the afternoon of Tuesday, November 2. The advance booking was also supposed to start in these multiplexes from Tuesday evening.Shockingly, its Thursday morning right now and the issues still remain unsolved. A source informed Bollywood Hungama, The trade and exhibition sector is already frustrated and are hoping that a consensus is met. But the theatre owners dont want to accept the terms laid down by Sooryavanshi makers with regards to 60% revenue sharing in Week 1. They fear it can set a precedent and the producers of the upcoming films might also demand the same terms.Explaining what the exhibitors demand, the source revealed, A lot of options have been laid out like 55% revenue share, 52.5% revenue share etc in Week 1. And thats just one part of the problem. The other problem is with regards to the division of shows between Sooryavanshi and Eternals. Sooryavanshi makers are asking for maximum shows for their film. In some cases, they have asked one or two-screen cinemas to not play a single show on Eternals and that all shows should be allotted to Sooryavanshi. Eternals also has considerable hype and the advance ticket sales in the IMAX and 4DX screens have been tremendous. So the exhibitors would want to have some shows of Eternals but they are not being allowed to do so. In the process, they fear hurting Disney, which has an enviable slate of films in 2022.At present, the single-screens and multiplex chains like Carnival, Movie Time, Wave, Maxus, Gold, Mukta, etc have opened up the bookings of Sooryavanshi. As for Eternals, those multiplexes having IMAX, 4DX etc have commenced selling tickets as Sooryavanshi makers are not looking at releasing their film in these formats. The source said, The advance has been very encouraging for both the films in several centres. But theres a lot more potential and both films can have huge openings if all screens start the advance sales. The exhibitors meanwhile are saddened and angry with the state of affairs. An exhibitor said, We were hoping that we would start Sooryavanshis booking way in advance and on Diwali day, well celebrate with gusto. Sadly, Diwali day is here and our bookings still havent begun. After ages, so many moviegoers have come to our cinemas and are calling us and asking about booking tickets of Sooryavanshi and Eternals. It is heartbreaking to tell them that we havent started selling tickets. Also, this issue is such that a layman wont understand. So we dont know what to tell them when they ask us why they cant get a ticket. On social media, fans of these films are already making their displeasure clear. The exhibitor continued, People are dying to watch Sooryavanshi. We understand and appreciate that the producers of the film waited for 19 months and didnt release it online. But the exhibition sector has also suffered. We hope and pray that the issue is resolved immediately. The booking has to start today. Or else, itll affect all parties involved. As per sources, another round of meeting will take place this morning between multiplexes and producers. Watch this space to find out the outcome of this discussion.

Advance booking for Sooryavanshi and Eternals yet to open in multiplex chains due to revenue sharing and show-sharing issues

1 Nov 2021

The much awaited film, Sooryavanshi, is all set to release in four days, on November 5. The excitement is sky-high but surprisingly, the advance booking hasnt opened yet in many cinemas and especially in the national multiplex chains like Inox, PVR and Cinepolis. This is because the cinemas and the producers of the film are in negotiations over two aspects.A source told Bollywood Hungama, Before the pandemic, the revenue sharing model was fixed since 2009 and the film industry was following it to the T. But post pandemic, the producers have been asking for a larger share. Sooryavanshis producers have asked for 60% revenue in Week 1, 55% in Week 2 and 50% in Week 3 and 4, from single screens, standalone multiplexes and non-national multiplexes. As for the national chains, the negotiations are going on and its expected to not be as high as 60% in the first week. Both parties are expected to reach an agreement by today (Monday) evening or latest by Tuesday afternoon. The source added, The single screens and standalone multiplexes have requested that they want the same terms of revenue sharing as the national multiplexes. A solution will be reached on this front soon. Those theatres which have 2k format can at least make it clear that in the absence of reasonable revenue sharing for Sooryavanshi, theyll go ahead and give all their shows to Disneys Eternals, which is also releasing on November 5. However, the non-2k theatres wont have this choice as Hollywood films are not allowed to be released in such cinemas. Hence, they have no choice but to screen Sooryavanshi and are hoping that a solution is reached soon. The source continued, Disney has asked for 50% revenue sharing in Week 1, 48% in Week 2, 45% in Week 3 and 40% in Week 4 in the case of Eternals. And as is the norm now, the cinema halls would also be expected to shell out 30% of the 3D premium with the studio. The other aspect where theres no clear consensus is over screen sharing. The source revealed, We have heard that Reliance has said that they want maximum shows of Sooryavanshi in multiplexes and nearly 100% of shows in theatres with 3 or less than 3 screens. This means that smaller theatres are not being allowed to show Eternals. Disney, on the other hand, has demanded at least some showcasing for their film in these theatres. It is going all out in making it clear to the exhibitors that Eternals is a big film and deserves to be played. The source remarked, It is for the first time probably that we are seeing Disney go all out in ensuring that its film gets a good number of shows in cinemas. The success of the previous Marvel film, Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings, must have motivated them to do so. Also, they see immense potential in the Indian market and feel Eternals can be a good way to accelerate their road to the expansion of business in the country. The trade source added, Disney and Fox have an enviable slate in 2022. Hence, the exhibitors are wary of getting into their bad books. In the midst, the exhibitors are suffering. An exhibitor sighed, Instead of these studios sitting across the table and solving the issue, they prefer to arm-twist us. We dont want to hurt either Reliance or Disney and want to provide a reasonable number of shows to Sooryavanshi as well as Eternals. We are just waiting and hoping a consensus is met and also that revenue sharing is reasonable. The exhibitor also asked, We never thought this problem would arise in the case of Sooryavanshi and Eternals. I now wonder what will happen in the week when Antim and Satyameva Jayate 2 would clash. And there are many more clashes taking place in the future. However, an industry insider assured that all will be well, Itll be a Happy Diwali for producers and exhibitors. This is not the first such instance and we are sure all the parties concerned would reach an agreement soon. These studios understand the plight and require theatres and the theatres also want these films to release so that they earn to their hearts content, which they havent been able to since March 2020. Just give it some time and things will be fine.
