Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], April 3 : Late actor Amjad Khan's dialogue 'Kitne aadmi the?' from 'Sholay' still echoes in everyone's mind. His portrayal of Gabbar Singh in Ramesh Sippy's directorial gave Hindi cinema one of the most iconic villains. However, he was not the original choice for the role.Actors Danny Denzongpa and Ranjeet were also approached by the makers to essay the role of Gabbar in 'Sholay', which starred veteran actors Amitabh Bachchan and Dharmendra as protagonists. In a recent interview with ANI, Ranjeet took a stroll down memory lane and revealed that he rejected 'Sholay' to honour his friendship with Danny."When they (makers) came to me, they told me that Danny would not come now. In fact, I had no idea about the role as well. I clearly told them, 'Danny is a good friend of mine...Either you get me no objection letter from him or at least let him talk to me. if he agrees, then I will do the film.' But I knew why he was not coming and I refused to be a part of the film," Ranjeet recalled."This role was destined for Amjad Khan...Ho sakta hai main Gabbar karta toh shayd audience ko nahin acha lagta," Ranjeet quipped.Ranjeet and Danny share a great friendship to date. He often shares pictures and videos with him on social media.Take a look at this post by RanjeetIn a video posted by Ranjeet on his Instagram handle in 2022, Ranjeet was heard advising his kids and the younger generation.View this post on InstagramA post shared by Ranjeet (@ranjeetthegoli)The video, presumably from a get-together, captures Ranjeet, Danny and Akbar Khan at their candid best. Danny asked Ranjeet what he'd like to tell the new kids. Ranjeet replied, "I'm your friend. You know your life and what you want from it. You've brought up in a way that you can take your own decisions."This left both Danny and Akbar teasing Ranjeet for being so wise.Ranjeet and Danny ruled the big screen with their villainous acts back then.
Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], April 3 : Veteran actor Ranjeet, known for his iconic villainous characters in Indian cinema, revealed that despite his on-screen persona, he is a teetotaler and a vegetarian. In an exclusive conversation with ANI, Ranjeet said, "Till today, I don't even smoke... I don't know the taste of non-veg.. and I'm not a priest, but I can cook."When asked about the characters where he was often seen with alcohol and meat in hand, the 'Reshma and Shera' actor jokingly said, "What bone, what skeleton? It used to be a full goat leg, and all that kind of stuff, but that also created a big problem later."The 82-year-old veteran actor also shared the challenges he faced while shooting scenes, which included real meat. He recalled instances where the strong smell of mutton lingered on his body, even after bathing and using cologne."... I got tired of it. Even after bathing at night and spraying cologne, my body would still smell like mutton. Now, with the goat in front of the den and Bindu ji and Helen ji dancing, I had to endure the odour. Despite the air conditioning running, the air was still stinking, as the mutton kept burning all day long." Ranjeet shared."One day, I approached the art director with my dilemma. I expressed, 'I have a significant problem. You've created such a realistic set... Can't you replicate chicken or goat instead?' The art director complied and made it with Plaster of Paris. I instructed my producer not to include a real goat anymore due to the high cost, and advised them not to order it from tomorrow," he added.Despite acknowledging the industry's challenges, Ranjeet remains steadfast in his craft. Whether in leading roles or cameos, he adds depth to every project, garnering admiration from peers and fans. His five-decade journey attests to his unwavering dedication. From menacing villains to nuanced characters, his versatility defines Hindi cinema. Classics like 'Sharmeelee,' 'Namak Haraam,' and 'Laawaris' showcase his talent. His commanding presence and unique voice captivate generations, cementing his legacy. He was also seen in supporting roles in 'Housefull 4' (2019) and 'Welcome Back' (2015).
Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], April 3 : Veteran actor Ranjeet has revealed that Parveen Babi was first chosen to be cast alongside Rekha and Amitabh Bachchan in the 1981 film 'Silsila' but she was later replaced by Jaya Bachchan. In an interview with ANI, Ranjeet opened up about his bond with Parveen Babi and said she was upset after she was not cast in the famous film. Parveen Babi passed away in January 2005. "She (Parveen Babi) was my dear friend... she was all alone. She was a beautiful lady. Always smiling and we used to call her 'fawada' because of her teeth....Once she was very upset and she was crying. I asked her 'Kya hua Parveen'. We were in Kashmir and I don't mind quoting because it's a fact. A film was made, 'Silsila' and Parveen Babi was the original heroine but she was asked to leave. And because of a gimmick controversy, they cast Rekha and Jaya Bhaduri in the film otherwise it was Parveen and Rekha."The 'Prem Pratigyaa' actor also talked about his friendly bond with the late actor Sanjeev Kumar, and said that they used to meet every evening. "He used to live in Pali Hill...every person has a spending threshold, I want this thing but can't afford it, still, I would take it even if have to take the loan... he was not like that. He didn't want to...his father died, his brother died, so many people died, you know. Wo to destiny hoti hai," Ranjeet said.He also said that the film industry has lost many iconic actors who shaped the Hindi cinema. "Many actors have gone. Shashi Kapoor, I used to work with all these guys. Dutt sahib, Raaj Kumar, Rajesh Khanna. Every day we were together. Char-panch hero hote the, char-panch villain hote the (there were four-five heroes and four-five villians)".Gopal Bedi, popularly known by his screen name Ranjeet, carved a niche for himself in the film industry and became one of the most popular villains of all time.Born in September 1941, Ranjeet has been part of several films and TV shows. His memorable movies include 'Raampur Ka Lakshman', 'Victoria No. 203', 'Dharam-Veer' and 'Amar Akbar Anthony'.
Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], April 3 : Veteran Bollywood actor Ranjeet has expressed his concern over the increasing trend of "vulgarity and inappropriate" content in films and web series on OTT platforms. In a recent interview with ANI, Ranjeet revealed that, despite being in the entertainment industry, he has watched only a handful of web series during the COVID-19 pandemic."And during COVID times, will you believe me if I say I have only seen two to three web series? Two were English historical and one Indian. I didn't watch other projects," he remarked. The 'Laawaris' actor went on to critique the prevalent use of explicit language and scenes in movies, stating that it often leads to discomfort in front of family members and staff."Nowadays, there is vulgarity and inappropriate language used in the movies that make you embarrassed in front of your staff and family members," he expressed. He also expressed dismay at the prevalence of molestation scenes and item numbers sandwiched between shots in contemporary films."What is all happening in the ads as well in this country, they are showing gambling in the ads. I am ashamed," he said. The 82-year-old veteran star contrasted this with the item numbers of the bygone era, particularly the 80s, where veteran actors like Waheeda Rehman, Helen, and Bindu performed with grace and artistry."Earlier during the 80s, there were item numbers in which Waheeda Rehman ji, Helen ji, and Bindu ji used to perform and they had grace in what they did. They were all trained in whatever they did and it was an art. Their dresses were also not revealing," he recalled nostalgically.Despite acknowledging the industry's challenges, Ranjeet remains steadfast in his craft. His commanding presence and unique voice captivate generations, cementing his legacy.Recently, he portrayed supporting roles in 'Housefull 4' (2019) and 'Welcome Back' (2015), further solidifying his status as a Bollywood stalwart.
Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], April 3 : Gopal Bedi, popularly known by his screen name Ranjeet, carved a niche for himself in the film industry and became one of the most popular villains of all time. However, he has often been misunderstood by people due to his on-screen baddie image. One such incident that came to light was when Madhuri Dixit refused to do a scene with him in 'Prem Pratigya'.In the film, Madhuri played poor man's daughter and Ranjeet was supposed to molest her.Speaking to ANI, Ranjeet recalled, "She (Madhuri) started crying and refused to do the scene. I was unaware of the situation... some art director had told me. There was a Bengali art director. Our director was Bapu, he was from South. I used to have fun on the sets, like when I would tell my co-stars, 'darling thoda udhar muh karo mai change kar leta hu'. I was not even used to going to the makeup room. Very normal and all that. I was accepted like that; otherwise, they would say I'm fake."He stated, "...I used to share a good bond with the fight masters and technicians. I was very cool with them, everybody. Not a status lover... Then, what happened, there was a handcart. Madhuri's father in the movie was poor and used to pull a handcart. The molestation scene was on the handcart. I was waiting for her but nobody told me what was happening. Ultimately, she agreed. Veeru Devgan was the fight master. He said that we will keep rolling the camera: 'beech mein camera cut nahi hona chahiye'."Ranjeet shared that he never made his co-actors uncomfortable. He said, "And all my heroines were very fond of me. And because I never used any force, I used to take my face behind their hair. I used to encourage them by encouraging them to pull my hair, scratch my face with their nails and all that. I used to give commentary to them. And not using my force and all that.""Molestation is a part of our job. The villain is not bad. With every heroine, it was compulsory," Ranjeet added.Ranjeet has worked in over 500 films in his filmy journey. Some of his notable performances include appearances in films such as 'Sharmeelee', 'Bandhe Haath', and 'Namak Halal'. He continues to leave his mark, as evidenced by his roles in 'Behen Hogi Teri', 'Housefull 2', and 'Housefull 4'.
