University of Leeds, a molecule in mosquito spit has been identified as a potential new target for vaccination against a range of diseases for which there is no protection or medicine.The University of Leeds Virus-Host Interaction Team researchers have discovered that the molecule, called sialokinin, makes it easier for a number of viruses to pass from mosquitoes to humans, where they can then take hold -- leading to unpleasant and potentially deadly diseases.These viruses include Yellow Fever, which causes serious illness in around 15 per cent of people infected; dengue, which can develop into the potentially fatal disease dengue fever, and Zika, which caused a global medical emergency in 2016.Previous research determined that sialokinin was able to alter the function of blood vessel cells grown in a lab, allowing increased blood flow and more effective feeding for the mosquito. But experts did not know what role it played in helping the virus to infect the body.Inspecting the behaviour of sialokinin on skin cells from mice, the team discovered that the molecule causes blood vessels to become permeable, allowing contents to leak out into the skin -- which inadvertently helps viruses to infect the host.Research supervisor Dr Clive McKimmie, Associate Professor in the University of Leeds' School of Medicine, said: "We have identified sialokinin as a key component within mosquito saliva that worsens infection in the mammalian host."Our research suggests that blocking sialokinin, for example through a vaccine or a topical treatment, may be an exciting new approach that prevents severe disease following infection with numerous distinct viruses."Lead author Dr Daniella Lefteri worked on the study as a PhD researcher in Leeds' School of Medicine. She is now a Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Glasgow.She said: "Our findings may also explain why some mosquitoes can spread infection to humans, while some cannot. Anopheles mosquitoes cannot spread most viruses. Crucially, we show that their saliva, which cannot cause leaky blood vessels, and cannot enhance infection of virus in mammalian host, does not contain sialokinin."Our work has increased our understanding of the way mosquito-derived factors influence infection in a host's body."Mosquito-borne virusesViruses spread by mosquitoes are known as arboviruses. They can affect humans and other mammals, such as cattle. In humans, symptoms generally occur three to 15 days after exposure, and can last three to four days. The most common symptoms are a debilitating fever and headache, but more serious disease can occur and some infections prove fatal.The Aedes mosquito, which is found on all continents except Antarctica, spreads arboviruses. Species include the Asian tiger mosquito and the Yellow Fever mosquito.Yellow Fever infects people living in and visiting parts of South America and Africa. Symptoms include fever, chills, headache, backache, and muscle aches. About 15% of cases develop into serious illness that can be fatal.Dengue is contracted by people visiting or living in Asia, the Americas or the Caribbean. According to the World Health Organisation, 5.2 million people contracted the disease in 2019. Half of the world's population is now at risk of infection.Zika virus is found in parts of South and Central America, the Caribbean, the Pacific islands, Africa and Asia. It can harm a developing baby. In 2016, thousands of babies were born brain-damaged after their mothers became infected while pregnant.There are currently no specific treatments or vaccines for dengue, Zika, and other potentially serious mosquito-borne viruses including Chikungunya, West Nile Virus, Semliki Forest virus and Rift Valley Fever virus.The research team says future work should focus on identifying the other factors in mosquito saliva that help viruses infect hosts, and developing therapeutics to target and block them.Dr McKimmie said: "One way to do this would be to develop a vaccine that generates neutralising antibodies that bind to these factors, and thereby stop them from working and helping the virus."

Hollywood actor James Franco is breaking his silence about sexual misconduct allegations made about him nearly four years ago. The actor has now admitted to his wrongdoings that were made against him in 2018. Franco also opened up about why he has decided to talk about the accusations now.In an interview on SiriusXM's The Jess Cagle Podcast this week, The Pineapple Express actor said, In 2018, there were some complaints about me and an article about me and, at that moment I just thought 'I'm gonna be quiet. I'm gonna be, I'm gonna pause.' Did not seem like the right time to say anything," he recalled. "There were people that were upset with me and I needed to listen. There's a writer Damon Young and he talked about when something like this happens, the natural human instinct is to just make it stop. You just want to get out in front of it and whatever you have to do apologize, you know, get it done. But what that doesn't do is allow you to do the work to, and to look at what was underneath.The 43-year old actor was accused of sexually inappropriate behavior by five women, four of whom were his acting students, in January 2018. At the time, an attorney for Franco denied each of the allegations and cited the actor's 2018 comments on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert as his formal denial. Over the summer, Franco reached a deal with Tither-Kaplan and Toni Gaal two of his former acting students who filed a sexual misconduct lawsuit against him in 2019. Businessman Raj Kundra, who is an accused in the pornographic content case, on Saturday moved a bail application in a court in Mumbai. It claimed that he was being made a scapegoat and that there was not single evidence in the supplementary chargesheet of him being actively involved in the creation of alleged pornographic content. Currently, Kundra is in the judicial custody after he was arrested on July 19 and was booked under relevant sections of the IPC and the Information Technology Act.Recently, the crime branch had filed a supplementary chargesheet against Raj and three others in the case of creating pornographic films and publishing them through apps. After that, Raj approached the metropolitan court for bail, saying that the investigation in the case was practically over.According to the reports, in the bail, filed through advocate Prashant Patil, Raj claimed that there is no evidence till date that would connect the application 'Hotshots' with an offence under the law. But as per the probe agency, the application was being used by him for uploading and streaming the alleged content. The bail plea also said that there is not a single allegation in the chargesheet claiming that he was actively involved in the video shootings.The bail plea further claimed that it is a sole discretion of the individual artists to upload their contents on the app and the contents of the complaint do not disclose any prima-facie offence against Kundra. Therefore, Raj is being falsely implicated in the case, said the plea.

The South Korean military court, on August 12, indicted him for the charges.The nine charges includes violation of the Act on the Aggravated Punishment, etc. of Specific Economic Crimes, violation of the Food Sanitation Act, embezzlement, violation of the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Punishment, etc. of Sexual Crimes, habitual gambling, violation of the Foreign Exchange Transactions Act, prostitution mediation, purchase of prostitution services, and special violence instigation.Along with 3 years in prison, Seungri was charged a fine of 1,156,900,000 won (approximately $994,544). His personal information will be registered in the national registry for the violation of the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Punishment, etc. of Sexual Crimes.According to Soompi, the statement by the court regarding the prostitution mediation stated The defendant conspired with Yoo In Suk to mediate prostitution for foreign investors on several occasions and gained profits. The defendants crimes that commercialized sex have a large negative influence on society."The court said, As his testimonies were inconsistent and changed between the police investigation, prosecution investigation, and at court, his credibility is low.Seungri was arrested at court on August 12, as the court saw potential flight risk, the 30-year old artist previously denied all the charges except for violation of the Foreign Exchange Transactions Act. He will now be discharged from the same following the sentence.

Updated: Jul 25, 2021 - 2:40 PM IST There seems to be no end to troubles for Raj Kundrawho has been arrested in a pornography-related case by the Mumbai Police Crime Branch. According to the reports, it is likely that four employees from Kundra's Viaan Industries will turn witnesses against Raj as he has not been cooperating well in the investigation.Raj Kundra was arrested on July 19 along with 10 others connected to the pornography case and will be in police custody till July 27. According to CBI sources, some employees are likely to be confronted with Kundra since he has been evasive in his replies during the investigation. The police had earlier told the court that the business was gaining financially from the illegal activity of making and selling pornographic material.Raj Kundra may also face charges of money laundering and those of violating foreign exchange rules with the Enforcement Directorate (ED) likely to register cases against him. Reportedly, ED may file cases under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) and Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) against Kundra.Meanwhile, the officials are also investigating Shilpa Shettys role in the case. She was questioned for 6 hours on Friday where she said that she was not aware of it and claimed that her husband is innocent. She also stressed on the difference between erotica and porn.
