Ali Zafar slapped with Rs. 2 billion lawsuit by Pakistani singer Meesha Shafi

18 Sep 2019

Pakistani musician Meesha Shafi has reportedly filed a lawsuit worth Rs. 2 billion against singer-actor Ali Zafar. The damage suit filed by Meesha includes Rs. 1 billion that she claimed for her harmed reputation and Rs 1 billion is meant to compensate for the mental torture and agony, reports state. She has also asked the court to declare Alis statements about her asfalse, malicious and defamatory. In the wake of the #MeToo movement, Shafi, in an elaborate social media post, accused Ali Zafar of sexually harassing her in more than one occasion.I have been subjected, on more than one occasion, to sexual harassment of a physical nature at the hands of a colleague from my industry: Ali Zafar. These incidences did not happen when I was young, or just entering the industry. This happened to me despite the fact that I am an empowered, accomplished woman who is known for speaking her mind! This happened to me as a mother of two children, she wrote. Sharing this because I believe that by speaking out about my own experience of sexual harassment, I will break the culture of silence that permeates through our society. It is not easy to speak out.. but it is harder to stay silent. Pakistani actor Ali Zafar files PKR 1 Billion defamation suit against musician Meesha Shafi after her sexual harassment claim

25 Jun 2018

Ali Zafar has decided to take legal action against Pakistani musician Meesha Shafi after she alleged that Ali sexually harassed her on many occasions. The musician took to social media to speak about it where she shared a note on the sexual harassment incidents. Followed by that, now Ali Zafar has decided to file a lawsuit claiming PKR 1 billion as defamation charges. Speaking on the defamation charges, Ali Zafar has reportedly sent a legal notice to Meesha Shafi wherein he has explained about the defamation damages. Starting from mental torture to loss of contacts to loss of reputation to loss of business opportunities, the notice explained that Rs. 2 crores, Rs. 8 crores, Rs. 50 crores and Rs. 40 crores have been charged respectively for the loss of damages that Ali has suffered. It is a known fact that the post shared by Meesha was in April. It claimed that despite her being a mother of two, she was subjected to sexual harassment on more than one occasion. She further said that she wanted to break the silence and empower other women to speak up against the crime. Heres a glimpse of her post: Sharing this because I believe that by speaking out about my own experience of sexual harassment, I will break the culture of silence that permeates through our society. It is not easy to speak out.. but it is harder to stay silent. My conscience will not allow it anymore https://twitter.com/hashtag/MeToo?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw #MeToo https://t.co/iwex7e1NLZ pic.twitter.com/iwex7e1NLZ MEESHA SHAFI (@itsmeeshashafi) https://twitter.com/itsmeeshashafi/status/986918710991519744?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw April 19, 2018 Ali Zafar had sent a legal notice earlier too followed by the Twitter post. In that one, he had asked Shafi to issue an apology on the same social media platform. When she failed to do so, the actor-musician decided to file defamation charges against her. Ali Zafar, who made his debut in Bollywood with Tere Bin Laden , was last seen in Dear Zindagi.Followed by that, owing to the ban of Pakistani actors in India, the actor has since then not been a part of a Bollywood film. On the other hand, he continues his stint as a musician and actor in the Pakistan entertainment industry. The actor will next be seen in a Pakistani film titled Teefa in Trouble. Also Read: Meesha Shafi says she has proof of harassment, Ali Zafar says Truth shall prevail

Meesha Shafi says she has proof of harassment, Ali Zafar says Truth shall prevail

26 Apr 2018

The sexual harassment issue involving singer-actor Ali Zafar is not as simple as it seems. Nor is it going to fall easily into the Harvey Weinstein slot. Ali seems to have as many supporters as dissenters in his fight to prove his innocence. And fight he will. When I reached out to Ali Zafar he responded, Truth shall prevail. I know me and I know my faith in HIM. This proclamation was not a self-righteous defence of a man trying to put up a show of bravado in the face of an ugly allegation. Ali Zafar is actually determined to prove his innocence because he believes in it. His friends, family, fans and many colleagues from the Pakistani entertainment industry are firmly behind him. A prominent actor from Pakistan sent me a defence of Ali and then deleted it saying he will speak at the right time. Meaning, at a time when more of Alis colleagues and friends would come forward in his support. The fact that women have come forward to defend him openly on social media without fear of being labelled traitors to the #MeToo cause is ample proof of the strength that Ali derives from his belief in his innocence. According to sources Alis wife Ayesha is also fully and unconditionally aligned with her husbands innocence. Its not going to be easy to make Ali Zafar look culpable because he has a lot of support within Pakistans entertainment industry. He doesnt have a sleazy reputation at all. Also, when the accuser claims she has proof of Alis guilt what does that mean? She took picture while the alleged misconduct happened? What proof can one have of sexual transgressions? Significantly the accuser Meesha Shafis lawyer claimed in a television interview that she has not received Ali Zafars legal notice asking for a public apology for her allegation in lieu of a defamation suit. Even more significantly Ali Zafar is in no mood to back down. He will fight this. Its about his reputation. Ali Zafar is very image conscious. He will fight this until he proves his innocence, says a source. Also Read: Ali Zafar sends legal notice to Meesha Shafi over sexual harassment remarks; demands 100 crores or an apology

Ali Zafar sends legal notice to Meesha Shafi over sexual harassment remarks; demands 100 crores or an apology

24 Apr 2018

The #TimesUp and #MeToo movements have taken over the world by storm. After Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein, Kevin Spacey, and other big names from their industry were accused of sexual harassment at the workplace, women around the world have come out with their harassment stories. After taking down big names in the industry, the movement has reached Pakistan. In the shocking turn of events, last week, Pakistani actress and singer Meesha Shafi accused singer Pakistani heartthrob Ali Zafar of sexual harassment. From her detailed post, she recalled the harassment experience and hoped that her experience will inspire other women to come forward with their stories. She has accused Ali Zafar of harassment on more than one occasion. While Ali has clearly denied all the allegations and plans to take the legal route, his band members Kanza Munir and Aqsa Ali have come out in support of him. Now, a source has said that Rs 100 crores legal notice has been sent by Ali Zafar to Meesha Shafi. Ali is seeking an apology from the singer. If not provided, then she will have to pay the money. A defamation suit will be filed against her if she fails to delete the original post stating allegations against the actor-singer within the two weeks of the notice being served. A day after the legal notice was reportedly sent, Meesha Shafi revealed that she has appointed Muhammad Ahmad Pansota and Nighat Dad as legal counsels. I have appointed Barrister @pansota1 and @nighatdad as my legal counsels to look after all issues pertaining to my sexual harassment claim against Ali Zafar. Media is requested to contact them to get any update on the ongoing issue, she tweeted on Tuesday. Ali Zafars official statement read as, I am deeply aware and in support of the global #MeToo movement and what it stands for. I am the father of a young girl and a young boy, a husband to a wife and a son to a mother. I am a man that has stood up for myself, my family, my colleagues and friends countless times in the face of slander, defamation and general unkindness. I will do the same today. I have nothing to hide. Silence is absolutely not an option. I categorically deny any and all claims of harassment lodged against me by Ms Shafi. I intend to take this through the courts of law and to address this professionally and seriously rather than to lodge any allegations here, contesting personal vendettas on social media and in turn disrespecting the movement, my family, the industry and my fans. Ultimately I am a strong believer that the truth, always prevails. Ali Zafar has not only been a heartthrob in Pakistan but has extensively worked in Bollywood. He starred in several films including Tere Bin Laden Mere Brother Ki Dulhan London Paris New York Total Siyapaa Kill Dill and Dear Zindagi. Also Read: After being accused by Meesha Shafi of sexual harassment, female band members of Ali Zafar support him

Ali Zafar accused of sexual harassment; Bollywood gives him a clean chit

21 Apr 2018

With Pakistani singer, Meesha Shafi accusing fellow-musician Ali Zafar of sexual harassment, the Harvey Weinstein syndrome that shook the American entertainment industry last year, has reached the Asian shores. Its only a matter of time before the sexual predators and pedophiles of Bollywood (yes, there are those too) are exposed. As far as singer Ali Zafar is concerned, Bollywood, where he has worked in quite a few films, has no reason to complain. One of the top Bollywood leading ladies with whom Ali has worked gives him a clean chit. He was always impeccably behaved. There was never a whiff of any untoward behaviour. He was punctual, professional, polite, almost aloof. Never tried to act familiar. But then, thats my experience. The narrative might be completely different in another continent. The last Bollywood film that Ali Zafar worked in was Gauri Shinde s Dear Zindagi.Everyone associated with that film vouches for Alis professionalism and decency. The narrative is indeed different for Ali across the border. Meesha Shafis allegations have hit hard. I tried to contact his colleagues from the entertainment industry in Pakistan. There was mostly a silence. Only one actor spoke on condition of anonymity. Main kya bolu? Hes a well-behaved cultured boy. And seems happily married with two children. This (allegations) will definitely affect his popularity. Hopefully, it wont damage his family life. Unless more women come forward with allegations against Ali Zafar. Has the #MeToo movement started in Pakistan? If it has, how long would it be before actresses start naming and shaming the sexual offenders of Bollywood?
