Amid 'Jawan' craze, director Sanjay Gupta recalls how SRK took fearless stand against underworld in 90s

9 Sep 2023

Taking to X, Sanjay showered praises on SRK, noting how he overcame various challenges in his life.Surprisingly, he recollected a moment when SRK refused to bow down to underworld bullying in the 90s.Back in the 90s when the underworld bullying of film stars was at its peak, Shah Rukh Khan was THE ONLY star who never gave in. Goli marni hai mar do, par tumhaare liye kaam nahin karoonga. Main Pathan hoon (shoot me if you want to, but I wont work for you, I am a Pathaan), he said. Hes the same today (sic), Sanjay wrote.Reportedly, film critic Anupama Chopra, in her book 'King of Bollywood: Shah Rukh Khan and the Seductive World of Indian Cinema', also detailed SRK's encounters with underworld dons, such as Abu Salem, Chhota Rajan and Chhota Shakeel.Coming back to 'Jawan', the film has scripted history at the box office. It has managed to enter Rs 100 core club in just two days.Reacting to fans' positive response after watching Jawan, Shah Rukh shared a note on X (formerly known as Twitter). He wrote, "Thank you for all the love and appreciation for #Jawan!! Stay safe and happy Please keep sending in the pics and videos of all of you enjoying at the movies. And I will be back soon to see all of them! Until then Party with Jawan in the theatres!! Lots of love and gratitude!"In 'Jawan', SRK shares screen space with Nayanthara, Vijay Sethupathi and Deepika Padukone among others.

Says Fardeen It feels good to be shooting again. I never thought Id be away for so long. But it happened. Initially, my wife Natasha and I had to move to London because we were facing challenges in having children. In 2013 we had our daughter. Four years later, our son was born. Each time there was a bundle of joy in the house it just took over our lives. I didnt even know how when so much time flew by. I had to be up and down between Mumbai and London. Because we had chosen the IVF route it wasnt easy for my wife Natasha. I had to be by her side.Initially, Fardeen thought hed be away from Mumbai for only 2-3 years. He said, If only life were that simple! Being away wasnt planned, I was dealing with circumstances. Now I am blessed with two beautiful children. The time Ive spent with them, away from work, has been beautiful. My children and I share an amazing bond. I count my blessings every day and have a lot to be grateful for. Now that I see the children a little more settled, I feel its time for me to get back to work. My return to work happened organically. It happened when it was meant to happen. Having returned, I find the entire landscape of the film industry has changed.

Sanjay Gupta to helm web series based on the life of Baby Patankar, the woman who created the countrys biggest narcotics empire

13 Jan 2022

After Mumbai Saga, director Sanjay Gupta is all set to return to the directors chair. And this time to helm a web series that will be the first from his production house White Feather Films. Based on the life of Baby Patankar, this is Indias Narcos story waiting to be told. The Meow Meow Queen, as she is popularly known as, will be designed as a ten part series continuing into multiple seasons. Gupta and his writers are currently penning the show that will go on floors in another six months. Gupta is all set to co-helm the web series along with Samit Kakkad.Sanjay Gupta says, I have been waiting for the right material to come by. Crime being my forte and I enjoy the beat very much. Here is a story that deserves to be told in all its glory. In the mid-1980s, Baby Patankar was a domestic worker. With two kids in tow, the lady was thrown out of her house by an abusive husband. On the roads, living in Worli slums, she was somehow making ends meet by working in many homes and delivering milk bottles. She rose from there to create and control the biggest narcotics empire in India. Her case was active till 2015. She was arrested after 120 kilos of MDMA was found in her residence. Our story traces her rise to power, how she took over what was popular presumed as a male bastion, her romance with a cop and how she exploited the relationship. The rivalry with existing drug lords who cut off her supplies, is another facet we will focus on. True stories like these are fascinating. While the series is currently being scripted, the makers are also in talks with a top OTT platform to seal the deal. It will be co-produced by Bhushan Kumar of T-Series, Gupta tells us, thus marking the premier production houses entry into the web world.

Sanjay Gupta acquires rights to life of controversial bar dancer Sweety; film to be titled Topaz

6 Dec 2021

If theres anyone who exemplifies the adage, making up for lost time, it is filmmaker Sanjay Gupta. After waiting in the wings during the pandemic-led lockdowns during 2020 and 2021, hes back on the ground with a string of exciting projects on his slate. While his production, Visfot, starring Fardeen Khan and Riteish Deshmukh, is nearing completion, he is gearing up for a super busy 2022. A week ago, he dropped a hint about making a movie in Goa which is unlike anything he has done before. And now, Gupta is ready to roll out a biopic on Indias most renowned and controversial bar dancer, Sweety from Topaz Bar, Mumbai. The film is aptly titled Topaz and will be directed by Samit Kakkad, who has recently delivered Indori Ishq on MX Player. The riveting biopic will roll out in the first half of next year and will be filmed in and around Mumbai. The casting for the film is underway. For those not in the know, Sweetys fan-following transcended boundaries, literally. She had patrons trickling in every night from all over the world. Topaz Bar, located in Southern Mumbai, was packed to the brim to watch her moves on the dance floor. The twist in the tale was that Sweety is a man who ran his kitchen by dancing in the garb of a woman every night to please the senses of hundreds of men. The film tracks his journey between the 1980s and 1990s up until the turn of the century when dance bars were forced to pull down shutters in the city.Sanjay Gupta, whose banner White Feather Films is producing the film, says, This is the right time to push the pedal really hard. Weve lost months and years to this pandemic, not being able to roll much. But theres no stopping us now. Sweetys life story is a compelling chapter in Mumbais history. Its larger than life, controversial, colourful, and exciting. Thats primarily why I was drawn to it. Looking at the screenplay weve developed over the last two years, Im certain that the audience will find it worth their time, too.Samit, on his part, adds, I have had a chance to know Sweety from up, close. Ive seen her dancing at the bar and the way men went weak in their knees at her sensational moves. She could give any bar dancer a run for her money. With her, I had a chance to get a lot of insights into the bar scenario of Mumbai and the life these dancers lead. Weve packed all of that and much more into the script. I, frankly, cant wait to start rolling Topaz.
