Richa Chadha releases a statement after receiving backlash over casual casteism for Madam Chief Minister poster

15 Jan 2021

Actress Richa Chadha will next star in Madam Chief Minister which is being helmed by director Subhash Kapoor. The first poster was unveiled recently but it received a lot of criticism from netizens over casual casteism. The makers received backlash over a Savarna, an upper-class woman playing the role of an untouchable. Many expressed their outrage over the fact that the broom is being used as a prop when it is known as a symbol of Dalit oppression and that the poster is stereotyping the community. After the intense backlash, Richa Chadha released a long statement on January 15, 2021, addressing the issue. "This film was a learning experience for me, for us all. The promotions were no different. The first poster that was released faced severe criticism, rightly so. What to me (and my privileged eyes) was a mere prop used by my character in a scene, came across as a stereotypical portrayal of Dalits for many of our people," she said in a statement.Glad to present to you all, my new movie "As an actor, I receive the communication for posting, complete with the copy, handles, and hashtags. Needless to say, I have no role in the designing of promotional materials. By saying this, I am not throwing the makers under the bus. They realised this inadvertent error and took this criticism in their stride. They responded immediately by retracting the objectionable poster and by releasing a new poster the very next day. It was a regrettable and completely unintentional oversight, not a deliberate insinuation. We are sorry. Our heart is in the right place. Hopefully, you will see that for yourself when you watch the film," she further said.Explaining her character Tara and what she stands for, Richa Chadha said, "We have made this film for love, as though we were on a mission to tell this story. Tara, one feisty oddball of a woman, fights patriarchy, caste oppression, brutal violence along with the usual betrayals of politics, to rise to the top and affect change. And she does so with incredible dignity and courage. I could relate to her righteous rage. She spoke to me. As the film nears release, I am becoming aware that I have to say goodbye to Tara. I am also aware that she will never entirely leave my side."Madam Chief Minister releases in theatres on 22 January.

Anubhav Sinha to produce an anthology based on COVID Pandemic, collaborates with Sudhir Mishra, Hansal Mehta, Ketan Mehta & Subhash Kapoor

26 Jul 2020

Post the success of his critically-acclaimed film, Thappad released this year, Anubhav Sinha has recently announced his next project – an anthology film based on stories and experiences from the coronavirus pandemic to be produced under his production banner, Benaras Mediaworks. Interestingly, the storyteller has joined hands with four of his filmmaker friends including Hansal Mehta, Sudhir Mishra, Ketan Mehta, and Subhash Kapoor to develop an anthology film focused on the subject that we are living through presently – the experiences of life amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.Talking about the idea of an anthology and the inspiration behind it, Anubhav Sinha informs, “It will be an interesting bunch of names, to tell stories of an interesting time in our lives. We will all interpret this period – starting February/March 2020 – and we will all tell a story from it.”Anubhav Sinha, who is spearheading the collective effort, points out, “This is such an interesting time, you know – even though I realise interesting may not be the best word. Sudhir's driver had contracted COVID and he was unable to get a bed – and we were making all sorts of phone calls just to get him a hospital bed. Uss raat mere dimaag mein aaya ki humein usko document karna chahiye. And what better way to do it than different filmmakers looking at different things? Sudhir bhai ke pitaji ki death hui COVID period mein. We lost Irrfan – aur hum Irrfan ke janaaze par bhi nahi jaa paye. Nikloon ki nahi nikloon… Tigmanshu (Dhulia) ko police se jhagda karna pada – he said main toh jaaonga, bhai hai mera!”He adds, “Yeh saari cheezein disturbing thi. Mujhe laga inko record karna chahiye. Maine phir baat kari sab doston se – and they all said haan yaar karte hain. And that's how the idea behind it began to formalise. This seemed like a good collaboration for all of us. There's one story by Subhash, one by Hansal, one by Sudhir, one probably by Ketan. These are filmmakers that I believe that the so-called 'Bollywood' has largely ignored.”Shedding more light on each filmmaker’s story, Anubhav explains, “Hansal’s story is quite comic and quite tragic. Sudhir's is quite political. Subhash's is also political but in a different way. I am still struggling with my story – I want to tell an atmospheric story, which is about fear. I live on the 20th floor and I can see a very large expanse of Mumbai from my window. It has suddenly started looking like a deserted, dead city. And Ketan is saying 'main dekh ke batata hoon'”.Produced by Anubhav Sinha under his banner Benaras Mediaworks, the untitled anthology is scheduled to release in 2021.
