Over the past couple of days, Ajay Devgn who vehemently spoke out about the #MeToo movement drew flack for apparently working with Alok Nath who has been accused of sexual misconduct. Post his statement that he would not work with any person accused of sexual harassment, Devgn ended up at the receiving end for working with Alok Nath in the upcoming film De De Pyar De.Reacting to the individuals who termed him a hypocrite, Ajay Devgn released a statement explaining what actually happened. Read on to see what he had to say. When the entire #MeToo Movement happened, I along with many of my film industry colleagues categorically expressed that I respect every single woman at the work place and I would not stand for any unfairness or atrocity against them. Nothing about my stand has changed. Coming to the question of having worked with Mr Alok Nath in my upcoming film De De Pyar De , here I must put certain things in perspective. This film was supposed to be an October 2018 release. The shoot of the film got over by last September. The portions with Mr. Alok Nath were canned by August in Manali. The said portions were shot over 40 days across various sets and an outdoor location with a combination of over 10 actors. By the time the allegations came out (in October 2018) the actors in the film including me had already started work on other films. It would be near impossible to get all the dates and combinations of the several actors in the film and attempt a re-shoot with some other actor replacing Mr Nath. It would also have been a huge monetary loss for the producers.Everyone is aware that film-making is a collaborative process. The decision to replace Mr Alok Nath could never have been mine alone. In this case, I would have to go with the joint-decision of the entire unit. Not to forget, I could not have brought the entire combination of actors back or put up sets again for a 40-day re-shoot because this would mean doubling the budget, which again wasnt my call to make. It would have to be the call of the makers. Had circumstances played out even slightly differently, I would have pushed for a different combination of actors. Unfortunately, this was not to be. I reiterate I am extremely sensitive to the #MeToo movement. But when circumstances are beyond me, I dont see why an attempt is being made to `single me out as being insensitive. This is untrue.
The tainted Sanskari actor Alok Nath, accused by writer-director Vinta Nanda of rape may have to face a long legal battle to prove his innocence. Vinta who alleges sexual violation 20 years ago while she was collaborating with Alok Nath on the long-running television serial Tara , is appalled by Alok Naths sniggering response to the rape charge. No regret, so sorry. Just a sexist smirk is all that he has provided. If he had apologized Id have considered moving on. But now I am willing to see this to the logical end, says Vinta with renewed determination. In an unverified statement Alok is quoted as saying, Neither I am denying this nor do I agree with it. It (rape) must have happened, but someone else would have done it. Well, I do not want to talk much about it as for the matter if it has come out, it will be stretched We only have to hear to womens stand because they are considered weak. Enraged humiliated but newly empowered Vinta lashes back, What else can we expect from him? He shows no remorse for what he did because thats the way he is. You cant change him. I am so glad I was finally heard about the way I was violated. It (the hurt and pain) has been with me for nineteen years. Now I feel free. Vinta says Alok Naths misconduct during the time they worked together was well-known. He misbehaved not just with me but also with the leading lady of Tara, Navneet Nishan. Matters came to a point where we had to sack him from the show. But as fate would have it he found his way back into my professional life when he was signed to play the lead in another serial that I wrote. This time, Vinta couldnt take the bullying and lewdness any more. A meeting with the head honcho of Zee television, filmmaker Dr Chandraprakash Diwedi would never be forgotten. He asked me to leave the show, he asked me to leave the country. When I refused to leave he asked his staff members to push me out of the roomAt this point I left. The point is, men like Alok Nath feel empowered to misbehave with women because they have the tacit backing of powerful peers. I am hoping this would change now. What next? Vinta is indeed considering the legal route. I am in consultation with my legal team. The legal route indeed seems the best possible option. When I spoke about the rape I never expected there would be such an overwhelming response. Now I feel confident. I havent felt better in a Long time. You cant stifle my voice any longer. Adds Vinta, He (Alok Nath) claims he made my career. How did do that? I wonder. Though he did do his best to unmake it. I am glad I got the violation out of my system. Interestingly Vinta had spoken about the alleged rape some years ago in a magazine interview. But it didnt get much attention. Perhaps the time for action against sexual offenders has come now.
